Not all arrived healthy

Were shipped May 14 ish but delayed in shipping in TN. When they arrived on May 30 they all had white mold on them (assuming.) A few were rotten soft and tossed. Giving benefit of doubt, planted 18 remaining white moldy plants into pots to see if they sprout. Hopeful. Have had good customer service prior and you get what you pay for. Fingers crossed.

Virginia Bluebell (Mertensia virginica) is a stunningly beautiful wildflower and offers several benefits to the environment and individuals who appreciate its presence.
Here are ten benefits of the Virginia Bluebells:

1. Ornamental Beauty: The primary benefit of Virginia Bluebell lies in its aesthetic appeal. The plant produces clusters of delicate, bell-shaped flowers that showcase a mesmerizing shade of sky blue. Its captivating beauty enhances gardens, landscapes, and floral arrangements, adding a touch of elegance and natural charm.

2. Pollinator Attraction: Virginia Bluebell flowers act as a magnet for various pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Their nectar-rich blooms provide a vital food source for these creatures, supporting their populations and promoting biodiversity in the ecosystem.

3. Erosion Control: With its extensive root system, Virginia Bluebell significantly prevents soil erosion. The roots bind the soil together, effectively reducing the risk of decay caused by heavy rainfall or wind, particularly in areas with loose or vulnerable soil.

4. Shade Tolerance: This wildflower demonstrates impressive shade tolerance, making it an excellent choice for gardens or landscapes with partially shaded areas. Its ability to thrive in dappled sunlight allows for more versatile placement options, enhancing the overall design possibilities.

5. Naturalizing Effect: Virginia Bluebell tends to self-seed, creating naturalized colonies in suitable habitats. This characteristic can be advantageous for restoring natural areas, meadows, or woodland gardens, as it gradually populates the landscape and adds a touch of enchantment.

6. Medicinal and Herbal Uses: Traditionally, Virginia Bluebell is used in herbal medicine for its potential therapeutic benefits. Some Native American tribes utilized parts of the plant to treat respiratory ailments, relieve inflammation, or soothe skin irritations. However, speaking with a healthcare practitioner is critical before using any plant for therapeutic purposes.

7. Educational Value: Virginia Bluebell provides an excellent educational tool for learning about botany, ecology, and the intricate relationships between plants and pollinators. Its life cycle, pollination process, and natural habitat can serve as a valuable teaching resource, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of nature.

8. Wildlife Habitat: The dense foliage of Virginia Bluebell offers shelter and protection to various small animals, including birds, insects, and amphibians. The plant's presence contributes to the overall biodiversity of an area, creating a habitat for creatures that rely on native flora for survival.

9. Naturalizing Soil: As Virginia Bluebell grows and eventually decomposes, it enriches the soil with organic matter. This organic matter helps improve soil fertility, enhances moisture retention, and promotes the growth of other plant species, contributing to the ecosystem's overall health.

10. Therapeutic Benefits: The mere presence of Virginia Bluebell can have a calming and therapeutic effect on individuals. Its delicate flowers, and soothing blue color create a serene atmosphere that promotes relaxation and reduces stress. Additionally, spending time in outdoor spaces adorned with this beautiful wildflower can improve mental well-being and connect people with the wonders of nature.

Caring for and maintaining Virginia Bluebell (Mertensia virginica) is relatively straightforward. Here are some essential guidelines to ensure the health and longevity of this beautiful wildflower:

1. Location: Virginia Bluebell thrives in partially shaded areas with moist, well-draining soil. Pick a spot in your garden or landscape that gets filtered shade or dappled sunlight throughout the day. Planting in direct sunlight can cause the delicate foliage to blister.

2. Soil Preparation: To increase the soil's fertility and drainage before planting, replenish it with organic material like compost. Virginia Bluebell prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil pH levels (around 6.0 to 7.0).

3. Watering: Virginia Bluebell requires consistently moist soil to flourish. Regularly water the plant, especially during dry spells or periods of extended heat. Around the plant's base, organic materials like shredded bark or straw can be used as mulching to keep the soil moist and stop the growth of weeds.

4. Pruning and Deadheading: Virginia Bluebell does not require extensive pruning. However, removing spent flowers (deadheading) can promote prolonged blooming and prevent the plant from self-seeding excessively. After the blossoms blur and the foliage yellows in pre-summer or late spring, you can manage the plant back to consider new development.

5. Pest and Disease Control: Virginia Bluebell is generally resistant to pests and diseases. However, slugs and snails may occasionally feed on the foliage. Regular inspection and manually removing these pests can help keep their populations in check. Additionally, maintaining good air circulation around the plant can minimize the risk of fungal diseases.

6. Naturalizing and Propagation: Virginia Bluebell has a naturalizing tendency, spreading through self-seeding. If you want to encourage its propagation, leave some seed heads on the plant to mature and disperse naturally. However, if you prefer to control its spread, remove the seed heads before they drop seeds.

7. Winter Care: The Virginia bluebell is a perennial that hibernates in the winter. Allowing the foliage to die naturally will protect the plant's roots from the colder months. To insulate the soil and give additional security, spread a mulching layer around the plant's base.

Virginia Bluebell offers many benefits, from its ornamental beauty and pollinator attraction to its erosion control properties and educational value. This beautiful wildflower is a significant resource that benefits the environment and those who appreciate it, whether utilized for landscaping, environmental rehabilitation, or creating a peaceful atmosphere.

The native perennial wildflowers stem emerges from the ground on the first warm days, often when a light coating of snow still dusts the earth. Because they are early spring risers, TN Nursery suggests Virginia bluebells to any gardener looking for color earlier in the growing season.

Virginia Bluebells Ask for Very Little From The Gardener

Besides a semi-shaded spot with soil that drains well, it benefits from fertilizing twice yearly and watering during extended dry spells. It's as easy for beginning gardeners to succeed with this lovely flower as seasoned pros.

Grow Virginia bluebells in these garden settings:

  • Native species garden
  • Cutting garden
  • Shade garden
  • Butterfly, hummingbird, or pollinator garden
  • Border plantings
  • Mass plantings
  • Fairy Garden
  • Along the shady banks of a creek or pond

The plant is relatively small, usually staying around two feet high and wide. But despite the shorter size, the color impact is enormous in bloom.

The smooth green stem is firm and grows straight upward. The leaves are a silvery shade of green, oval and smooth in shape, and have pronounced veins. Leaves can reach eight inches, providing fantastic foliage until it returns to dormancy in the later half of summer.

The bell-shaped flowers are profuse and showy. They stay under an inch long. Each bloom has five light blue petals that drape down from the stem, appearing to nod with the breeze.

Virginia bluebells bloom from mid-spring to early summer.
