Tussock Sedge (Carex stricta)

Tussock Sedge: Carex stricta, aka Tussock Sedge, is a popular, perennial United States native ornamental grass. It originated in the dense forests from Missouri eastward to the Appalachians. It will flourish in full or partial sun in the moderately warm USDA plant hardiness zones.

The name tussock sedge refers to the growth pattern of this ornamental. It grows in dense, three-foot-tall, attractive tufts or tussocks. Each one measures about two feet wide.

You might also hear gardeners refer to this species as upright sedge or hummock sedge.

Tussock Sedge Is A Water-Loving Species

It will flourish in a high-moisture environment and will tolerate occasional flooding.

As a mountain native, the ornamental craves plenty of organic materials such as wood waste, leaf litter, or peat moss and appreciates the addition of this content when you plant it.

This plant is deer-resistant, rabbit-resistant, heat-tolerant, and cold-tolerant.

Use Carex stricta in some of these locations:

  • Water Garden
  • Rain garden
  • Near a pond, stream, or creek
  • In slow-draining meadows or fields
  • Accent plant
  • Ground cover plant
  • Cottage garden

The lovely, natural good looks of Tussock Sedge. Carex stricta is an attractive plant that forms attractive clusters. They form a fountain-like shape as the leaves reach up and spill over from their weight.

The leaves are thin and narrow but surprisingly strong. They are a true medium green on the top side but a pale yellow on the opposite side. Its flowers form in the summer--small brown cylindrical heads on top of the sturdiest spikes of grass.

The flowers release seeds that help the plant spread the following season.
