Sawgrass (Cladium mariscus)
Sawgrass: Cladium mariscus, or sawgrass, is perennial. ornamental sedge grass. It grows well in coastal and semi-coastal regions, particularly along the mid-south and southeastern United States.
Sawgrass strongly prefers a wet environment, so some are surprised to learn they are drought-resistant. They are also pest-resistant and disease-resistant.
The species originated in the mild Mediterranean climates of Europe, North Africa, and Asia but is well-suited to the moderate USDA plant hardiness zones. Over centuries of naturalization in North America, it is now a widespread coastal grass.
Sawgrass Grows Fast and Is Easy to Care For
Sawgrass is a fast-growing species and requires full sunlight or a partially sunny location. Once you plant the grass, it forms large clumps and establishes sturdy roots. It can grow aggressively, so many TN Nursery gardeners plant it in containers that they submerge in their ponds to control the fast spread.
Sawgrass grows in either freshwater or brackish waters where rivers meet the sea. Its presence helps to keep the soil underneath in place and avoid erosion damage during coastal storms or as a result of wind and wave actions.
The shoots begin growing toward the sunshine and can reach up to ten feet taller above the water line; however, they average around seven.
Sawgrass Add Beauty to a Coastal Landscape, Pond, or Water Feature
Sawgrass stems grow erect and tall, thick, dense, and lush. They are flat and have a narrowed tip. As they grow taller, the stems bend from their weight, creating a graceful arched look.
Add it to your water garden, pond, for coastal gardening, in a rain garden. It will become a wildlife refuge for species that seek shade from the sun on hot days or camouflage from predators.
