Landscape Uses | Maintenance Tips for Ilex opaca

Plant in a location with full sun to partial shade. This plant prefers full sun, and shade will limit its growth. In the early spring, it will flower with small, white, and fragrant flowers. Bees visit the flowers, as they are a source of food in the early spring.

This evergreen prefers well-draining, acidic soil. To make any soil more acidic, you can add sulfur or iron sulfate. You should avoid planting this evergreen in clay, overly wet, or compacted soil.

This tree is a great source of food for local birds and small mammals. Robins and Mockingbirds are particularly fond of the berries and will nest amongst its branches. This is a highly deer—and rabbit-resistant plant.

How to Grow and Care for Bare Root Shrubs

Bare root shrubs are a budget-friendly and efficient way to plant during the cooler months when they’re dormant. Before planting, soak the roots in water for 3–6 hours to rehydrate them. Choose a site with the appropriate light exposure for the species—most flowering shrubs prefer full to partial sun. Dig a hole wide enough to spread out the roots and deep enough so the crown (where the roots meet the stems) sits level with the soil surface.

Mound a bit of soil at the bottom of the hole, spread the roots over it, and backfill with native soil while gently firming it to remove air pockets. Water deeply after planting to settle the roots. Keep the soil moist but not soggy during the first growing season to encourage healthy establishment.

Mulch around the base (not touching the stems) to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly to remove any broken branches and to shape after the first flush of growth. With minimal care, bare root shrubs will leaf out beautifully and grow into reliable, long-term landscape anchors.

Caring Tips

How do I care for my American Holly Tree?

Each box contains detailed care instructions and information about your product. But here's the basics.

Care Tips

To care for American Holly, ensure well-drained, slightly acidic soil—water regularly during dry periods and mulch to retain moisture and control weeds. Trim in late winter to retain shape and promote dense growth. Avoid over-fertilizing.

Light Requirements

American Holly flourishes in full sun to part shade. It likes at least 4-6 hours of natural sunlight daily but can handle some shade, particularly in hotter climates. Too much shade may reduce berry production and overall plant vigor.
