This native tree is a valued host plant for rare butterflies and moths that rely on its dense branches for shelter. The nuts, nestled within spiky husks, are edible not only for animals, but people as well. The shallow, dense roots require well-drained soil with consistent moisture to avoid stressing the plant. Seedlings can handle some levels of shade, but the tree is best grown in full sun.

Landscape Uses & Planting Tips | American Beech Tree

This tree uniquely forms low, dense branches that create a canopy even early on in its development. This lends itself to being a fantastic source of shade, useful in the hot summer months. Because it serves many important functions for supporting biodiversity, it is the perfect tree to plant for conservation efforts.

This can be for areas that require reforestation, or simply amongst other crucial plants in a native garden. While fairly low maintenance, it is recommended to mulch around the base of American Beech Seedlings when they are young to lock in moisture. Be sure to plant in an area with well-aerated soil as the roots are sensitive to compaction.

Noteworthy Traits | Fagus grandifolia in Landscapes

American Beech Seedlings are a well-loved addition to landscapes for several reasons. Whether it be the silvery grey bark or tasty nuts, this native is an absolute value-add. The leaves are easily recognizable: Ovate in shape, with deep veins that point towards its sharp teeth.

Care

American Beech seedlings thrive in well-drained, loamy soil and prefer slightly acidic conditions. Water regularly, especially in the first few years, to establish a robust root system. Mulch the base to maintain moisture and repress weeds.

Plant Reproduction

American Beech seedlings spread by dropping seeds, carried by animals

Plant seedlings in early spring or fall when temperatures are mild. Choose a well-drained site with the proper sunlight for the tree species. Dig a hole that's deep and wide enough to support but not hamper the root system without bending or crowding the roots. Place the seedling in the hole, ensuring the root collar (where the roots meet the stem) is level with or slightly above the soil surface. Fill the hole with soil, and pack it around the roots to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the moisture consistent, especially during the first few years, to help the roots establish. Put a 2-4 inch layer of mulch around the base, but keep it away from the trunk to retain moisture and prevent weed growth. Protect the seedlings from pests and physical damage with suitable guards or fencing. Tree seedlings will thrive and grow into strong, healthy trees with proper care.

We carefully package every plant to retain superior moisture during transit. Once prepared, orders ship the same day through UPS or USPS, with typical delivery in 2–4 days.

Returns are not accepted, but plants are reshipped if extended warranty insurance was purchased at checkout. Otherwise, all plants include a standard 5-day warranty after delivery.

Caring Tips

How do I care for my American Beech Seedlings?

Each box contains detailed care instructions and information about your product. But here's the basics.

Care Tips

American Beech seedlings thrive in well-drained, loamy soil and prefer slightly acidic conditions. Water regularly, especially in the first few years, to establish a robust root system. Mulch the base to maintain moisture and repress weeds.

Light Requirements

American Beech seedlings thrive in partial to full shade, preferring filtered sunlight. While they can tolerate some direct sun, especially in the morning, too much sunlight can stress young seedlings. They naturally grow under a forest canopy.

Fresh and healthy

I ordered 20 American Beech seedlings and they arrived well packaged, moist, and healthy. I obviously just planted them but I feel like they are going to do just fine. Ordering was easy, the prices were good and delivery was quick. I've used other vendors but, for the service and prices, I will stick with TN Nursery.

Wish I Had Know of These Beech Seedlings Before

Wife and I often commented on the lacy light tan understory trees whenever out driving. Thought they were prettier and perhaps more affordable than dogwoods for our homestead. Found TN Nursery had 'em. Purchased 20 12" seedling trees and they promptly shipped 25! Arrived in a week in excellent shape. Believe most or all will make it and adorn the forest acreage outside our windows.

Nice seedlings

The beech seedlings I received were in great condition, packed well and kept moist, and most had good root systems. There were a couple extras included, presumably in case a couple of them don't make it. I would definitely purchase again.

Beech Trees

My Beech trees arrived in good condition. Heeled them in right away. Plans to grow them in the ground for awhile before turning them into bonsai.
