The pecan is a native and deciduous tree that will give you plentiful amounts of delicious pecans to harvest. With its height and wide-spreading branches, this tree will provide plenty of shade to your yard. Pecan Tree – Leaves, Flowers, and Harvest

The leaves are long and bright green, with serrated edges. Leaves will turn yellow in the fall. Its male flowers are long yellow-green catkins, and wind carries pollen to the female flowers. The trees develop husks that begin green and turn brown as they mature, hiding and protecting the nut inside. The nuts grow in groups. Nuts are ready for harvesting from fall through winter. Harvest nuts quickly; otherwise squirrels and deer will beat you to them.

Plant your pecan tree in an area with full sun and plenty of space. This plant prefers to be planted in well-draining, loamy soil. Avoid clay soils that may become waterlogged. This is a low-maintenance tree once it gets going. Pecans live a long time, so your family and many future generations will benefit from it.

Pecan Tree for Sale: Planting Your Bare-Root Tree

This plant ships bare root. We dig our pecans while they are dormant, so get yours in the ground as soon as it shows up at your door. It is recommended to plant it at least 40 feet away from your house and never close to power lines; big pecan trees can drop limbs in a storm. Dig deep enough that the long taproot goes straight down without bending. 

Water it once every week through the first summer when there’s no rain. Remember to keep the grass pulled back from its trunk. A single pecan tree does not set many nuts on its own. Plant at least two pecan trees within about 150 feet of each other, so the wind can carry pollen between them.

Pruning and Protecting Young Pecan Trees

Prune yearly, removing any damaged, diseased, or rubbing branches. Protect the tree against browsing and rub damage from deer and other pests by fencing or caging it while it is young. This will become unnecessary as the tree matures.

I ordered the 3-4 ft pecan trees buy 1 and get 1 free. They were 2 ft at best but they sent me 3 which was awesome. So in reality I paid for 1 and received 2 free, and though undersized I am giving them a 5 star rating. I read a lot of reviews saying that these pecan trees are not labeled to as what kind or if they are if they are type 1 or 2 for pollination purposes. These are great as rootstocks to add a scion of a mature tree cutting that you want to grow. I am grafting 2 Choctaw and 1 Pawnee scions that will produce nuts quicker than waiting for these to produce nuts in 10 years.
