Indian Pink (Spigelia marilandica)
The Indian pink plant, Spigelia marilandica, is a flowering perennial native to eastern North America. It belongs to the Logania family and typically grows in woodland habitats, producing vibrant red tubular flowers with yellow interiors that bloom in early summer.
The Indian pink plant can grow up to 2 feet tall and is often used in gardens as a decorative plant due to its bright, showy flowers. The plant does best in well-drained soil and partial to full shade, making it an excellent choice for shady gardens or woodland areas.
Indian Pink: TN Nursery customers who adore hummingbirds know how Spigelia marilandica, or Indian Pink, is an underutilized species to attract their winged friends. This native perennial herbaceous flower, which performs beautifully in the warmer USDA growing zones, produces tubular flowers in early summer--the sweet little birds cannot resist them.
Besides being a hummingbird attractor, Indian Pink also attracts pollinator insects like butterflies, moths, and bees to help promote a healthier garden ecosystem.
Indian Pink originated in the forests of the western Appalachian region but works well across many growing regions. It enjoys shade to partial shade; the species prefers loose, moist soil with good drainage.
However, it is also a very resilient species and can tolerate short dry spells--you might need to water it during weeks that lack rainfall. Besides keeping the soil moist and providing shade, Indian Pink is a fuss-free addition to any shady yard.
You might also hear gardeners refer to this species by the following names:
- Pinkroot
- Wormgrass
- Woodland pinkroot
Indian Pink Is a Beautiful Flowering Herb Plant
The plants form in small- to medium-sized attractive clumps. The green-brown deciduous stem grows to between two- to three feet high.
The leaves of Indian Pink are dark green and pretty, even after the flowers finish blooming. The leaves are oval and grow in about seven pairs per stem. They grow as large as four inches long, providing a shady respite for small woodland creatures in the summer heat.
Indian Pink flowers grow erect and in small clusters of attractive tube-shaped flowers. Each cluster can contain as many as twelve blossoms. The flowers are scarlet to deep red with a bright yellow middle--the contrasting colors create a striking star pattern.
Where to Plant Indian Pink:
Indian Pink is a late-spring to early-summer bloomer. Plant it anyplace you need to punch up the color during June. It works beautifully in a natural garden, shade garden, shaded rock garden, or as a border planting.
