Lilacs

I got two of these and planted mid March. One is already leafing out and made it through the late frost we just had. The other one has leaf buds and they should be popping soon. I am very pleased with these healthy shrubs

Lilac Shrub

Syringa vulgaris, the famous lilac, is a TN Nursery customer favorite shrub that blooms every spring across the cooler USDA plant hardiness zones in the United States.

The species is a European native species originating in the Balkan region. Eastern European immigrants brought this favorite shrub to remind them of home. Americans quickly adopted the lovely lilac. Today, it is a common site across many gardens.

The lilac shrub is a hardy, cold-tolerant species. Indeed, a long, cold winter helps it produce its vibrant springtime colors.

The lilac's sweet, fresh floral fragrance announces the arrival of spring. Many gardeners plant it near an often-open window to enjoy the aroma as they air and freshen their homes in the springtime.

How to Use the Lilac Shrub in Your Landscape

Syringa vulgaris is lovely as a stand-alone specimen. However, it is also gorgeous when you put it to use in the following settings:

  • Pollinator garden or butterfly garden: Springtime pollinators, such as butterflies and bees, will visit this shrub.
  • Hummingbird garden: Hummingbirds love the elongated shape of lilac flowers.
  • Cutting garden: The lilac produces showstopping flowers that bloom abundantly enough for cutting. Snip a few for an arrangement and enjoy the wonderful fragrance inside.
  • Cottage garden: The lilac is a cottage garden favorite! After it blooms, the emerald foliage provides a lovely backdrop for your summertime cottage flowers.

Lilac Shrub Produces a Gorgeous Favorite Flower

Lilac shrubs grow to a maximum height of around sixteen feet and twelve feet in diameter. If you want a shorter shrub, you may trim it back--but only after the blossoms finish their colorful show!

Leaves can be as large as six inches long and three inches wide, although they generally stay smaller. They form on sturdy stems in an opposing pattern, are heart-shaped, and bright emerald to dark green in hue.

Lilac flowers are the real star of the show. Though only blooming for two weeks or so, they are worth the wait for that short window each spring.

Each tiny flower has four long petals, forming a narrow tubular shape. Although fairy-sized individually, the flowers form on the end of stems in abundant, show-off clusters that blossom for about two to three weeks. Many colors of this shrub exist--TN Nursery blooms are a soft purple or lavender.
