Forsythia Shrub
Forsythia x intermedia, the common forsythia shrub, is a rapid-growing, deciduous shrub that will light up the springtime with its cheery golden-yellow blossoms. Another common name for the forsythia shrub is golden bells--a tribute to those lovely blooms.
This species is super easy to care for, and unfussy about soil quality or fertilizing--once or twice per year will do. Once fully grown, the forsythia is drought-resistant and heat-tolerant.
Forsythia is a native species of Asia. However, it is well-suited and widespread in the American landscape, especially across the mid-south, southeast, and midwestern regions.
Forsythia Shrub Makes An Idea Hedge in Your Landscape
When customers call TN Nursery asking for help finding a species that will grow fast to cover an eyesore, we often recommend this shrub.
Forsythia grows fast, making it an ideal option for a privacy hedge, to establish a property boundary, or in a natural area that needs some lovely color. Also worth noting is that the forsythia shrub is unbothered by low air quality, so landscapers often install it in an urban garden setting--park, playground, or any other city environment.
Select a full-sun spot in the yard--it needs at least six hours of direct sunshine. Forsythia will tolerate partial sunlight, but it might not bloom as profusely without direct sun.
During the first year or two, provide your young forsythia with about an inch of water each week, especially during the long and hot mid-summer days. Once established, it will not require this extra step.
Because it is a fast grower, most prune the forsythia to control the height in the early fall. Avoid pruning in the springtime, or you will sacrifice the gorgeous yellow flowers.
Gardeners adore the cheerful springtime flowers of the forsythia shrub. Forsythia is most famous for its cheery yellow blossoms. Each bloom is small (under an inch), bell-shaped, and has four petals. They grow up and down the stem, making a significant color statement.
The stems have a slight curve and bend into a gentle arch as the tree grows to its maximum ten-foot height. The leaves are approximately four inches long, medium or dark green, oval, and with slightly toothy edges.
