Bamboo Plants For Sale

The Bamboo Plant 2-3' grows prolifically when planted in zones 9-11 of the USA. This plant is native to China, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam, but has become an introduced and, at times, invasive species due to its rapid and aggressive growth habit. At TN Nursery, we sell small, indoor plants for your home enjoyment.

However, if you happen to live in a warmer region of the USA, this plant will survive and thrive outside. Culms, the stems of the bamboo, can grow up to 60 feet tall. Be mindful when planting outdoors, as they can take over areas and become incredibly hard to remove.

Plant Details - Bamboo Plant - Arundinaria

Family: Poaceae

Hardiness Zones: 9-11

Light Requirement: Full Sun - Partial Shade

Water Needs: Moderate to high

Height: 30 - 60 ft

Spread: 4 ft

Growth Rate: Fast

Bloom Time: Bamboo flowers very rarely

Leaves form from the nodes of the branches and emerge in clumps of long, slender, papery foliage. Bamboo branches form at the nodal ring, which is easily visible as it separates each section of the culm. Branches tend to only exist midway up the culm to the top of the plant.

The Bamboo Plant 2-3' can be used for various purposes. It can be planted as a forest and regularly harvested for its culms to be used for construction projects. It makes a great privacy fence or musical instrument. While the young shoots of this plant are edible, they are considered to have poor taste and are not commonly consumed.

Landscape Uses and Maintenance - Bamboo Plant

When taken care of indoors, this plant does best in an area that receives indirect light all day long. Daily misting is recommended, as the plant loves high humidity. Watering in small amounts regularly is also recommended. Enough moisture should be maintained to keep the roots moist but not soggy. This plant can be propagated either by division or by taking cuttings of the branches and propagating in water.

When planted outdoors, it prefers moist, humus-rich soils and loves humid conditions. However, this vigorous grower will tolerate a wide array of conditions. It can tolerate temperatures just below freezing and will survive periods of drought. However, long periods of drought will result in the plant defoliating. Due to its vigorous growth, it makes a fantastic erosion control installation.

How To Grow & Care Tips

How to Grow and Care for Specialty Plants for Specific Causes

Specialty plants serve meaningful purposes beyond beauty—whether it's attracting pollinators, repelling pests, preventing erosion, feeding wildlife, or creating habitat. To grow them successfully, start by understanding the specific goal of your planting. For example, milkweed and bee balm are best for pollinator gardens, while vetiver and creeping juniper are ideal for erosion control. Choose plants that are well-suited to your USDA zone, soil type, and light conditions to ensure long-term success.

Prepare the soil by enriching it with compost and ensuring good drainage. Plant during the recommended season—usually early spring or fall—and space according to mature size to prevent overcrowding. Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots establish, then reduce frequency once the plants are settled. Mulching helps conserve moisture and keeps weeds at bay.

Minimal pruning and occasional fertilizing will keep most specialty plants healthy. Whether you’re supporting bees, deterring deer, or stabilizing a hillside, these plants are powerful tools in building a purpose-driven, eco-friendly garden.
