Trios: Beautiful Plants Intentionally Selected to Grow Well Together
Imagine the delight of opening a package to find not one plant, but three—each selected and combined with the other two, with a shared space and purpose in mind. You see the promise of potential not only in each plant but also in their arrangement: little communities of color, texture, and form that you know will look amazing right from the start.
Rather than picking single plants, each of our plant Trios is a ready-made, cohesive planting design. Plant and flower enthusiasts know that putting together successful plant combinations requires time, experience, and vision. With Trios, we’ve done that work for you. Whether you’re planting a new space or bed, refreshing an existing one, or are simply a plant enthusiast who loves discovering and sharing new combinations, you’ll love the ease and beauty of our Trio designs.
Planting Groups with Style, Pizzazz, and Plants That Work Together
Designing plant groupings isn’t new to TN Nursery. We’ve been doing it successfully for more than 65 years. In fact, since 1959, our plants have helped create everything from suburban gardens to many of our nation’s most famous landscapes, from Arlington National Cemetery to The Washington Monument. Our horticultural knowledge has been featured on networks like Discovery and History. And it’s that same decades of experience and know-how that’s in every Trio we sell. You can rest that we don’t just put pretty plants together. We only combine plants that will truly thrive in their settings and in their roles in the landscape.
Why Gardeners Love Our Trios
Selecting the right combination of plants for any space can be a challenge. There are so many things to think about—contrast and balance, grouping and flow. You want to ensure a complementary palette of colors and textures. But it can be difficult to know for sure if the plants you pick will grow at the same rate or have the same soil and water needs. Will a tall plant grow where you want it to, or will it overshadow its neighbors? What about bloom time? We get it, and that’s why we love creating Trios.
We hand-pick each set of plants for compatible growth requirements and care needs, then focus on their individual looks and personalities. Each plant in a Trio has its own part to play: a tall, structural plant matched with a lower-growing, texture-rich groundcover; a tall, colorful, all-season perennial highlighted by two low-maintenance foliage plants; a low-maintenance, tall grass or shrub that adds year-round structure and greenery in a space; or showy blooming perennials or annuals surrounded by two low-growing, solid-color foliage plants for visual contrast and background interest.
With a Trio, you don’t have to guess which plants are right for your landscape. All the work is done for you, and you can plant it, water it, and watch it grow.
Three Plants. Three Parts. One Planting Design.
Trios have as many design possibilities as there are garden plants. And when those plants work as well together in the landscape as they do on your plant palette, the results can be stunning. Each Trio has its own landscape design story to tell.
Some Trios are made up of seasonal color stars—imagine combinations of annuals and perennials to bring beautiful pops of color to your beds and borders, containers, and accent gardens. Some build texture and complexity with mixtures of foliage plants to create lush, woodland-edge-style layers. Some attract pollinators by the dozens, with nectar-rich flowers or foliage. Some give spaces a long season of bloom, and others focus on rich, full all-green palettes that provide calming backdrops for more showy planting combinations.
Get to Know Our Plant Trios
Each Trio is like a little landscape puzzle piece, and you can fill those outdoor spaces with natural, cohesive beauty by selecting the plants you need to create the overall look you want. That means perfect combinations for new beds, planting around a patio or deck, filling containers, establishing a small pollinator garden, or sharing a gift with a gardener who loves surprises.
Are our Trio plant bundles good for beginning gardeners?
Yes, definitely. We carefully select each Trio to include plants with the same basic care and maintenance needs, so even a beginning gardener can feel confident that it will work well.
Do your plants arrive already prepared for the real world?
Yes. All of our plants are field-grown, so they’re already adapted to less than perfect conditions and ready for planting when they get to you.
Do our Trio plants work in small spaces?
Yes. In fact, many are designed especially for compact spaces and containers or small accent beds.
Can I expect these plants to work well visually?
Yes, that’s the whole point. We choose plants with contrasting but complementary textures, forms, and seasonal interest.
