New York Ferns For Sale

The New York Fern is a plant that can be enjoyed all year round. It is a plant that does well in most climates. The fern's new growth appears as delicate green fronds in the spring. The fern's leaves turn deep green in the summer and become more robust. It is a hardy perennial that can be grown in all four seasons. This fern is native to the eastern United States and can be found in USDA hardiness zones three through eight.

Where New York Ferns Grow

New York Ferns can be found throughout the state of New York. They are often found in wooded areas, but they can also be found in gardens and parks. This fern is popular for gardeners because it is easy to care for and doesn't require much maintenance.

Why Choose the New York Fern

If you're looking for a versatile and hardy plant, the New York Fern is a great option. This plant can be enjoyed all year round, and it does well in most climates.

Where do New York Ferns grow best?

A: New York Ferns thrive in shady, moist environments such as woodlands, meadows, and along stream banks. They prefer partial to full shade and do well in humus-rich soil with moisture. Gardeners often use them in shaded beds or naturalized landscapes, where they adapt quickly and provide lush, green groundcover.

How tall do New York Ferns get?

A: Mature New York Ferns typically grow between one and four feet tall, depending on the growing conditions. Their fronds are long and slender, giving them a delicate, airy look that softens shaded areas. Planting in groups can form colonies that create a complete, carpet-like effect in the landscape.

Exposure

The New York Fern thrives in low to moderate light conditions. It prefers filtered light or partial shade, mimicking its natural woodland habitat. Direct sunlight can scorch its fronds, so avoid total sun exposure.

How To Grow & Care Tips

How to Grow and Care for Bare Root Fern Rhizomes

Bare root fern rhizomes are easy to plant and bring lush, woodland beauty to shaded or partially shaded areas. To begin, soak the rhizomes in water for 1–2 hours before planting to help rehydrate them. Choose a planting site with rich, well-draining soil high in organic matter. Ferns thrive in moisture-retentive soil, so amending with compost or leaf mold is ideal.

Dig a shallow hole wide enough to spread the rhizome out horizontally, and place it just below the soil surface with the growing tips (or “eyes”) facing upward. Cover lightly with soil, press gently, and water thoroughly. Keep the soil evenly moist—never dry or soggy—while the fern establishes.

Mulch with leaf litter or pine needles to conserve moisture and mimic the fern’s natural habitat. Avoid direct sunlight, as most native ferns prefer cool, shaded conditions. With patience and proper care, the rhizomes will send up new fronds and form a graceful, low-maintenance colony that returns year after year.
