Willow Oak Seedlings for Sale | Quercus phellos Tree Seedlings

Willow Oak Seedlings, known botanically as Quercus phellos, are a remarkably hardy species of oak native to the Southeastern United States. Don’t be fooled by the tender leaves gracefully blowing in the wind; this tree can handle incredibly difficult conditions. Found along streets in the city or even thriving in compacted clay soils, this powerhouse tree’s strong upright form never wavers.

While it is important to mention that this tree prefers well-drained, moist soils whenever possible, it can handle just about any site that has full sun exposure. When young, it does require consistent moisture but can tolerate dry spells upon maturity. The deciduous foliage is alternately arranged along the branches, covering inconspicuous yellowish catkin flowers. It takes up to 20 years for this tree to fully mature, at which point it will begin producing small acorns.

Landscape Uses and Maintenance - Willow Oak Seedlings

This tree is a great choice for urban locations with high air pollution or unhealthy soil. The dense canopy will provide a much-needed shady respite in the summer months no matter where it is planted. Planted from Willow Oak Seedlings, this makes for much simpler mass planting to cover a large area.

This tree is incredibly low maintenance, and there is no need to prune unless a specific shape is desired. The dense, fibrous roots lend itself to being highly effective for erosion control in areas that desperately need soil stabilization.

Noteworthy Characteristics of Quercus phellos (Willow Oak)

Willow Oak Seedlings are named after their lance-shaped foliage that resembles that of a true willow tree. As a fast grower, this tree will quickly take on a distinct pyramidal shape.

How To Grow & Care Tips

Plant seedlings in early spring or fall when temperatures are mild. Choose a well-drained site with the proper sunlight for the tree species. Dig a hole that's deep and wide enough to support but not hamper the root system without bending or crowding the roots. Place the seedling in the hole, ensuring the root collar (where the roots meet the stem) is level with or slightly above the soil surface. Fill the hole with soil, and pack it around the roots to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the moisture consistent, especially during the first few years, to help the roots establish. Put a 2-4 inch layer of mulch around the base, but keep it away from the trunk to retain moisture and prevent weed growth. Protect the seedlings from pests and physical damage with suitable guards or fencing. Tree seedlings will thrive and grow into strong, healthy trees with proper care.
