About this plant

Quercus Phellos - Willow Oak Seedlings Details

Willow Oak (Quercus phellos) Seedlings: Excellent Landscape Shade Trees

Quercus phellos seedlings grow into native hardwood trees with willow-like leaves and a strong, even branch structure. They do well in gardens, parks, commercial properties, farms, and restoration projects.

Narrow, bright green leaves emerge in the spring and give the canopy a softness you don't see in most other oaks. In midsummer, the foliage is dense, providing shade and adding texture to the landscape. In fall, the foliage turns golden yellow and bronze, adding another season of color before the tree's winter shape is revealed.

Quercus phellos Seedlings Provide Habitat for Species Conservation

This native tree provides habitat, cover, and food for birds, squirrels, and other wildlife. Its small acorns, about half an inch long, are a favorite of ducks, deer, wild turkey, blue jays, and squirrels. This is why it's often planted in wet bottomlands and duck areas.

Landscaping with native hardwoods is a good way to improve outdoor spaces while supporting the local ecosystem.

The willow oak pairs well with flowering shrubs, woodland perennials, ornamental grasses, and native understory trees. It makes an excellent specimen tree that can line a driveway, anchor a large lawn, or grow in groups in a woodland. Its narrow, willow-like leaves also set it apart from broad-leaved trees and flowering plants.

Willow Oak Seedlings for Sale: Excellent for Mass Plantings

These seedlings are an economical way to establish premium native shade trees over large areas. Choose 6–12 or 12–18 inch seedlings in packs of 50, 100, or 500. They're ideal for wholesale buyers, municipalities, schools, commercial areas, parks, conservation groups, and homeowners who are thinking long-term.

This plant ships bare root, so plant your seedlings right away. Set the roots in a bucket of water for an hour or two. Dig a hole big enough to spread the roots out, set the seedling in so the top of the roots sits level with the ground, and fill the hole back in. Willow oaks love moisture, so keep the soil damp, not soggy, through the first summer. Willow oak has a more fibrous root system than most oaks, so it usually settles in faster after planting. A tree tube or cage can keep deer and rabbits from chewing on the young stems.

Our willow oak seedlings for sale grow in USDA zones 5 through 9. They like full sun and moist, slightly acidic soil, and they handle wet spots and short floods better than most oaks. Avoid alkaline soil, which can turn the leaves yellow. Clear away the grass and weeds around each spot before planting. For restoration or woodlots, space seedlings about 10 to 12 feet apart. For shade trees, give each one 30 to 40 feet, since a mature willow oak can reach 50 to 75 feet tall and 40 to 50 feet wide.
