Reedgrass
Reedgrass: Calamagrostis x acutiflora, or common reed grass, is a tall perennial ornamental species with a mature height of up to five feet. It requires a sunny spot in the garden and grows in most USDA plant hardiness zones.
Reedgrass is a United States native species, part of a large family of over 250 species. TN Nursery recommends this decorative grass for its ease of care. It has a resilient nature and will recover from any harm quickly; it's deer-resistant; drought-resistant; heat-tolerant; cold-tolerant; pest-resistant; and disease-resistant.
Some gardeners refer to reed grass as feather grass or feathered reed grass. Both alternative common names refer to its flower, a highly decorative, feathery, light tan plume that dances with every breeze.
Reedgrass Uses in Your Landscaping Projects
Reedgrass is a lovely, tall grass species. It grows in attractive clumps and visually adds height to any open, sunny spot. Calamagrostis x acutiflora will grow in places with too much sunshine for less sun-loving species.

- Pollinator garden (it attracts bees and birds)
- Border planting (in the back row)
- Rock garden
- Full-sun natural areas
- Sunny bank of a pond or water garden (must get a minimum of six hours of full sun)
The tall and elegant, good looks of calamagrostis x acutiflora.
The tall, slender appearance of reedgrass makes it a lovely decorative plant when co-planted with smaller flowers in front of it. The three- to five-foot height, tall and wispy grass blades, and feathered flowers add a natural, organic vibe.
Each leaf stands tall as if stretching toward the sun. It is upright, narrow, and has a striking green color early in the season and turns tan to a light golden-brown hue in the autumn.
The feathered flowers form on top of the tall grasses, emerging as a deep pink or lavender in its earliest days and fading to tan in the autumn. The flowers produce the seeds that will grow the following season.
