Bare root flowering shrubs are a wonderful way to add long-lasting color and structure to your garden, often at a lower cost than potted plants. These dormant shrubs should be planted in early spring or fall when temperatures are mild. Start by soaking the roots in water for 3–6 hours to rehydrate them. Choose a sunny or partly shaded spot, depending on the variety, with well-draining soil. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots and deep enough so the crown (where the stems meet the roots) sits at ground level.
Gently spread out the roots over a small soil mound at the base of the hole, backfill with native soil, and press firmly to eliminate air pockets. Water deeply after planting and keep the soil consistently moist (not soggy) during the first growing season. Apply mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it away from the base of the stems.
