As pleasing an aroma as many plants emit there are plants that give off horrible stenches as a protection against predators. Animals that have heightened senses of smell will be turned away by plants that contain bad odors. These bad smelling plants can also find their way into your garden or surrounding area, depending on where you live. If you live in wooded areas, chances are you may come across plants that make the air putrid, and this can be problematic if you are someone who is trying to liven up your garden with pleasing odors. If you are trying to get rid of plants with a bad smell, but do not know what they look like there are ways of spotting them.

The Eastern Skunk Cabbage can be found on the east coast of the United States and is known for its mimicking of skunk odor. This plant is recognizable by the purple color within the leaf folds and can make their way into neighborhoods and gardens. They mostly spread when bees and insects pollinate the ground and if an insect happens to be in your garden they could very well sow the seeds of this skunk cabbage in your very own garden. The important thing to remember is to recognize skunk cabbage or any other plant that emits a bad odor for immediate removal.

Other bad smelling plants Amorphophallus, Stapelia and Smilax are other plants that can be spotted in our hemisphere and other parts of the world, but they can find their way into your yard if the conditions are right. If you are having a pest problem, you can grow bad smelling flowers to deter pests. If you do not mind the smell and have an expansive yard then you can plant these bad smelling flowers to ward off deer and other small animals that may find their way onto your garden. These plants may smell and, but their beauty does compensate for their terrible odors. This is a way of naturally repelling animals while protecting your garden area.

However, if you are one who does not take kindly offensive odors you can get rid of bad smelling flowers by keeping a trimmed and neat garden. Recognize any plants that may emit foul odors and use herbicides to kill them. Always attack the roots in order to kill the plants. Be sure to regularly cut grass in order to cut down on excess foliage such as ragweed, weeds and other plants from contaminating your garden.
