The Vaccinium stamineum is also commonly known as deer berry even squaw huckleberry or gooseberry. This is a flowering shrub is a part of the heath family and it is native to eastern North America. It grows in Ontario in the north and in Florida in the south and even in the west - Texas. The flowers of the Deer Berry are white bell-shaped flowers and they have 5 spreading petals that grow in April through June. On someoccasions these plants are also seen growing from October through November. This deciduous shrub grows into a small tree of up to 5 m tall and is the favorite browse material for white tailed deer. From the stamineum species refers to the noticeable yellow stamens in the flower.

Uses of the Deer Berry
The Deer Berry fruit is an edible pubescent berry and it is a highly variable species. There are a number of varieties of this plant that have been named differently. Usually the Deer Berry is found in rocky or sandy soil especially in the xeric woodlands. The berries that you get from the plant are delicious to eat and are consumed by humans and animals including possums and squirrels and even birds. The plant is also ideal for landscaping and blends well with acidic soils that are well drained.

Deer Berry Cobbler
You will need:
- 3 Tbsp. Melted Butter
- 2 Cups of All-Purpose Flour
- 2 Cups of Deer Berries
- 2 1/2 tsp. Baking Powder
- 1 Cup of White Sugar
- 1 Beaten Egg
- 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
- 2/3 Cup of Milk
- 1/2 tsp. Salt
Grease a 9 x9 pan. Mix flour sugar baking powder and salt. Stir in milk vanilla butter and egg until smooth. Mix in Deer Berries. Pour into pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes until top is firm.
