This plant's unique leave structure makes it suitable for a showcase plant in many settings. Each plant bears a six-inch fruit at its top with three to four pistillate spikelets. The spikelets appear silvery-white when they first develop before turning brown in the late summer. A leafy bract appears at the bottom of the spikelet, and it can be up to eight inches long. This plant does well in full-to-partial shade, and it will tolerate almost any type of soil. This plant loves moist conditions, but this plant is moderately enduring for short dry periods. In woodland settings, this plant often functions as an understory plant.

Woodland Sedge can be used to stop erosion.
It performs well in woodland gardens. This fast-growing plant is beautiful to butterflies and songbirds, and deer will not bother it. It can also use as a groundcover in areas receiving moderate foot traffic. To keep it from spreading, this plant should be cut off after the first hard freeze of the winter. While it is most commonly encountered, in woodland settings, it can also be used in prairie settings. Some find it useful along water features to stop erosion. This plant is helpful in many different circumstances.

Woodland Sedge

The Carex blanda, or Woodland Sedge, is a perennial sedge that grows in highly dense, rounded clumping colonies throughout the Eastern and Midwest United States and Canada. With large populations of the Woodland Sedge spotted as far north as Manitoba and North Dakota and as far South as Northern Texas. This sedge's ideal growing conditions found in USDA Growing Zones 3-9. As the name would suggest, the Woodland Sedge is native to a variety of wooded habitats, as well as found at the margins of rivers and streams.

Leaves of the Woodland Sedge are a distinct bright green color and reach a maximum length of roughly 8 inches with a maximum width of approximately one-quarter of an inch. The maximum total height of the sedge ranges up to 30 inches tall and spreads of the Woodland Sedge reach up to 2 feet wide at full maturity. Grown best in soil with a neutral to high pH, this sedge plant grows most efficiently in moist environments with direct sun exposure and moderate shade.

Flowers of the Woodland Sedge are founded above the bright green leaves and take on a laminated, cream-colored appearance. Foliage is present year-round, and late-April to mid-May is when the majority of flowering takes place.
