Wood Fern: Dryopteris marginalis, often called either leatherwood or marginal wood fern, is a native species of eastern North America. It is a perennial semi-evergreen that keeps most of its foliage all year, although some leaves may go dormant during the coldest days. This species grows well from the northernmost parts of New England to the mid-south and western United States.
This plant requires little care after planting in a shaded location. It will survive drought if you keep it well-watered during those hot spells. It does best in heavily shaded areas but tolerates some sunshine. This species looks attractive when you pair it with other native plants.
The common name, leatherwood fern, refers to the leather-like texture of its foliage.
Dryopteris marginalis grows in medium-sized clumps that retain some color throughout the year. It is easy to grow and does not spread as quickly as some other ferns--perfect for someone who wants to add beautiful color without dividing out plants each year.
The wood fern prefers shady, moist locations with little or no direct sunlight. Those lovely semi-evergreen branches stay green, showing signs of life throughout winter's long, cold months. When there is little cover for wintertime birds, you might spot your feathered friends using this plant as a windbreak.
This fern has compound leaves six inches long, ranging in color from blue-green to brown. The leaf's texture is rough, attractive, and leathery, making it ideal for landscape design.
This species needs moist soil that channels well and is rich in humus. In addition to its low maintenance needs, it is also an attractive addition to winter orchards and shaded yards.
Wood fern is a perennial semi-evergreen that will lend gorgeous color to your yard year-round. Order your easy-care Dryopteris marginalis from TN Nursery today.

I am very pleased with my purchase of the bare root wood fern. Plant arrived packaged well and I decided to plant the dormant fern in a pot during winter to be ready for spring planting. I am very pleased to see the fern already producing a small fiddlehead, two weeks after potting. I purchased several other fern varieties and I am looking forward to seeing them grow. Thank you and I will be buying with confidence from your online nursery again.
