Dandelion Plant

Dandelion Plant

Dandelion perennials have bright yellow, disk-like flowers atop slender, green stems with jagged-edged leaves that form a rosette at the base. While it is often considered a weed due to its rapid growth and ability to spread, it possesses several characteristics that can benefit landscaping. Add a Pop of Yellow to Your Yard with Dandelion Plant Blossoms Dandelion plants can reach a height of eight to 12 inches and have a rosette of leaves around a deep taproot. The leaves are sleek and feature acute indentations without any visible hairs. They have lance-, rectangular- or spatula-shaped foliage and flower heads covered with ray petals. Their blooms, which can grow up to two inches long, are a single shade of yellow and sit on a sturdy, hollow stem. Even though they bloom from April through September, they're most noticeable in May and June. Well-established dandelion plants sometimes bloom twice, once in the spring and once in the fall.  Improve Soil Quality and Erosion With The Dandelion Plant They have roots that spread really wide. This loosens hard-packed soil and increases aeration, making it healthier. Their roots extract calcium and potassium from the earth, making these vital nutrients available to nearby plants. And because their roots also have the ability to hold the soil together, these plants help prevent erosion. Fertilize Your Grass With The Dandelion Plant The dead foliage adds organic matter to the soil and provides essential nutrients for grass to grow strong and green. The wind-aided seed distribution and cross-pollination capabilities of them also make them useful for fertilizing grass. About nine to 15 days after the yellow flowers appear, they open up to reveal a white puffball, also known as a fuzzy pappus. The wind carries bits of the fuzzy pappus, which contains seeds, as part of the plants' reproduction process. Hummingbirds, in particular, like these fuzzy seeds and use them to build nests. Enjoy Better Pest Control With The Dandelion Plant In early spring, many kinds of pollinators rely on them for their nectar. While some of them can yield as many as 400 seeds, the typical yield is 180. Pollinators like ladybugs, honeybees, and moths play a key role in pest control by eating, weakening, and killing garden pests.

Butterfly Bush

Butterfly Bush

Butterfly Bush is a versatile and beautiful plant with numerous landscaping benefits. Native to China and Japan, it has gained popularity worldwide for its attractive appearance and ability to attract butterflies and pollinators. While it is not used for herbalism, its ornamental and ecological advantages make it a sought-after addition to gardens and landscapes. This plant ships bare-root and dormant (no leaves or foliage) It will not green out until next spring. Add a Variety of Color to Your Yard With a Butterfly Bush The Butterfly bush are extremely beautiful plants that can grow up to 15 feet tall. They develop opposite-growing leaves that have serrated edges. The foliage can grow up to 10 inches. They typically bloom sometime between mid-June and early October. Their blooms can range in color from blue to pink to purple, yellow, and lavender. These blooms form in clusters and can get as long as 12 inches. Create Sensory Appeal With Butterfly Bush Sensory gardens are well known for stimulating your senses, and they are great for this purpose. Many of them produce fragrant flowers that fill the air with sensual aromas. Their nectar-rich flowers attract butterflies and other pollinators. As the insects flap their delicate wings, the garden enjoys a symphony of sound and movement that brings the surrounding scenery to life. These plants also have textural leaves, which contrast nicely with other plants. Use Butterfly Bush to Help With Soil Stabilization They help with soil stabilization by reducing erosion thanks to their deep roots. These roots tie soil particles together, helping to keep them in place during periods of heavy rain or high winds. The dense foliage created by these plants also serves as a shield for the soil, which is particularly beneficial for reducing surface water runoff. Runoff has the potential to collect contaminants in soil, such as herbicides, grease, bacteria, oil, rubbish, and fertilizer, so it's very important to prevent it. The leaves that fall from them also help with soil stabilization by providing essential nutrients to the plants' roots. The stronger the roots, the better they can stabilize the soil. Grow Butterfly Bush for an All-Natural Privacy Screen They are ideal for creating natural solitude in gardens due to their dense foliage and fast growth. The thick greenery serves as a natural screen, offering much-appreciated isolation from neighboring houses and the hustle and bustle of city streets. When grown in groups or rows, they provide the highest level of seclusion imaginable. Their tall and bushy growth habit also makes them ideal for filling in spaces between flower beds and landscaping. The evergreen foliage of many shrubs allows them to serve as year-round privacy screens. When grown in dense rows, they can also obscure the vision of bigger animals and birds that might be predators.

Fertilizing: Perennial plants generally benefit from an annual application of slow-release fertilizer in early spring or early fall. Choose a balanced fertilizer designed especially for perennials, and adhere to the application rates recommended on the package. Avoid overfertilizing plants to prevent excessive foliage development at the price of flower production.4. Deadheading and Pruning: Regular deadheading, the removal of spent flowers, promotes continuous blooming and prevents the plants from expending energy on seed production. Additionally, pruning your perennials helps maintain their shape, remove damaged or diseased foliage, and rejuvenate the plants. 5. Dividing: Some perennial plants in your grab bag may become overcrowded or outgrow their allotted space over time. Dividing these plants helps rejuvenate them and create new plants for your garden or to share with others. Dividing is typically done in early spring or fall when the plants are dormant. Follow plant-specific guidelines for the best time and method to divide each variety.6. Pest and Disease Control: Regularly inspect your plants for signs of pests or diseases. Identify any issues early to take appropriate action. Some common problems include aphids, snails, and slugs, while diseases like powdery mildew and leaf spot can affect perennials. 7. Support and Staking: As perennials grow, some may require support to prevent them from flopping or bending under their weight or in windy conditions. Install supports, such as stakes or cages, early in the growing season to provide stability and prevent plant damage. Be gentle when securing the plants to the supports to avoid damaging the stems.8. Winter Protection: Depending on your climate, some perennial plants may benefit from winter protection. Consider using burlap or protective coverings in colder regions to shield delicate plants from frost or snow damage.9. Regular Monitoring: Regularly monitor your perennial plants for signs of stress, nutrient deficiencies, or other issues. Pay attention to changes in foliage color, wilting, or insect infestations. Promptly address any problems to prevent them from spreading and affecting the overall health of your garden.10. Black Willow

Black Willow

The Black Willow is a highly adaptable tree that can grow in wetlands, along riverbanks, and in drier upland areas. Their extensive root systems help stabilize soil, prevent erosion, and improve water purity by filtering pollutants and excess nutrients. This shrub is a remarkable species with numerous landscaping benefits. Its unique characteristics and ecosystem services make it a valuable addition to various environments, ranging from residential gardens to public parks and urban green spaces. Enjoy Rapid Growth With Black Willows Black willows can reach heights ranging from 40 to 60 feet. They have wedge-shaped leaves that narrow to a pointy end. These leaves are normally two to six inches long. One side of the leaves stays somewhat glossy and has a medium-to-dark green color. The other side usually has a dull appearance in the same hue. As they grow, the bark on these trees may become a sandy color or even turn black. It also becomes deeply grooved. The genetic makeup of these trees causes them to grow extremely fast. Their root system, which efficiently absorbs water and nutrients, further contributes to their rapid growth. Enhance Phytoremediation With Black Willows By drawing out organic pollutants, metalloids, and metals from the soil, they act as filters. They can even remove the herbicide Bentazon from shallow groundwater via their filtration capabilities. This is very useful in areas where there is a lot of industrial waste or agricultural runoff. The rate at which these plants can detoxify themselves is dependent on the contaminants they come across. Another way these plants help with phytoremediation is by releasing enzymes and other chemicals that break down organic pollutants in soil or groundwater. Once absorbed, the pollutants undergo metabolic or physiological changes inside the tree. These changes either lower their concentration or convert them into less harmful forms. Create Natural Privacy With Black Willows Because of their towering height, thick foliage, and quick growth rate, they are great options for creating natural privacy. Their verdant greenery creates a dense canopy that shuts out unwanted light and noise. Planting them in rows creates a living wall that blocks the view of nearby houses or busy roadways. Boost Erosion Control With Black Willows They provide soil protection because of their deep, spreading roots. These roots have a high capacity for absorbing water, which is of great benefit in areas prone to flooding or waterlogging. They not only prevent soil saturation but also mitigate water runoff. Their adaptability to damp environments and soil preservation capabilities make them useful for revegetating disturbed areas and rehabilitating damaged ecosystems.

The foliage will fall to the ground, and they return in early spring to provide a fresh, green color to your landscape. Red Hibiscus Attracts Wildlife While the flowers generally do not have a strong scent that appeals to people, insects, and birds are strongly attracted to the flowers. More specifically, the flowers draw hummingbirds and various pollinating insects to your yard, which benefit other plants. In addition, these insects are natural predators of some of the damaging and unwanted pests that otherwise would thrive in the yard, providing you with natural insect control. Red Hibiscus Is Easy to Grow This is a large plant that can grow seven feet or more in height and four feet wide. From a small plant, you can expect the rose of Sharon to reach full maturity in only two to three years with minimal care. They do best in damp soil and direct exposure to sunlight.

Increasing the soil's fertility and structure will provide your ground coverings with a solid basis and encourage their best growth.3. Adequate Watering: Proper watering is crucial for establishing and growing ground covers. Water newly planted ground covers profoundly and regularly to help their roots develop. Once installed, most ground covers have moderate water requirements. Avoid overwatering because it might cause root rot and other moisture-related problems.4. Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around your ground covers to conserve soil moisture, suppress weed growth, and regulate soil temperature. Mulch also acts as a protective layer, preventing soil erosion and providing insulation during extreme temperatures. Use a mulch material like shredded bark or compost, and apply it in a layer about 2-3 inches thick, keeping it away from direct contact with the plant stems.5. Regular Feeding: Ground covers are generally low-maintenance but can benefit from occasional feeding. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper dosage and application. Avoid over-fertilizing, as it can lead to excessive foliage growth and reduce the overall aesthetics of your ground covers.6. Pruning and Trimming: Regular pruning and trimming help maintain the shape and density of your ground covers. Remove any dead, damaged, or overgrown foliage to improve airflow and prevent the spread of diseases. Trim back any plants encroaching on neighboring areas or paths to maintain a neat appearance. Prune after the flowering period to promote vigorous growth and encourage additional blooms.7. Weed Control: Although ground covers help suppress weeds, occasional weed control measures may be necessary. Regularly inspect your ground covers for any weed growth and remove them promptly. Hand pulling or using a garden tool to remove weeds, taking care not to disturb the roots of your ground covers. Applying a layer of mulch can also help prevent weed growth and make weed removal easier.8. Pest and Disease Management: Monitor your ground covers for signs of pests or diseases. Common problems include slugs, snails, and aphids. Implement appropriate pest control measures, such as handpicking, using organic insecticides, or introducing natural predators. Powdery mildew, and promptly address them with proper treatments like fungicides or cultural practices.9. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage profound root growth. Avoid frequent shallow watering, as it can promote external root growth and make your plants more susceptible to drought. 3. Mulching: Mulching also helps prevent soil erosion. Use a 2-3 inch layer of mulch, keeping it a few inches from the plant stems to avoid rotting.4. Fertilizing: Perennials and ferns generally don't require excessive fertilization, but providing them with a balanced slow-release fertilizer during the growing season is beneficial. Follow the recommended application rates and timing provided on the fertilizer packaging. Avoid over-fertilizing, leading to excessive foliage growth and reducing flower production.5. Pruning: Regular pruning helps maintain your plants' shape, size, and overall health. Remove dead, damaged, or diseased foliage and flowers to promote new growth. Prune overgrown or leggy stems to encourage bushier growth and maintain a neat appearance. 6. Deadheading: Regularly deadheading your flowering perennials to encourage continuous blooming and prevent energy wastage. Deadheading redirects energy to developing new blooms, ensuring a prolonged flowering period.7. Pest and Disease Control: Monitor your plants regularly for signs of pests or diseases. Early detection allows for prompt intervention and prevents the spread of infestations. Use organic pest control methods, such as handpicking pests, insecticidal soaps, or introducing beneficial insects. Maintain good garden hygiene by removing fallen leaves and debris to minimize disease risks.8. Winter Care: Prepare your plants for winter by cleaning the garden and removing dead foliage. For ferns, cut back the foliage in late fall or early winter after it has turned brown. Mulching ferns can also protect winter.9. Regular Inspection: Take the time to regularly inspect your plants for any signs of stress, disease, or nutrient deficiencies. Look for wilting, discoloration, or unusual growth patterns. Early intervention is critical to addressing any issues and preventing further damage.10. Tulip Poplar Seedlings

Tulip Poplar Seedlings are young trees of the tulip poplar species (Liriodendron tulipifera), typically grown from seeds, and they display the tree's characteristic tulip-shaped leaves and potential for rapid growth into a tall deciduous tree. Tulip Poplars, also known as Liriodendron tulipifera, are the tallest eastern hardwoods. These fast-growing trees will attain a height of up to 192 feet, and they grow by an average of three to five feet annually. With their unusual look, they become super eye-catching in the fall as they turn into a bright yellow color. Each leaf will attain a size of five to six inches wide and long. That way, they're well-prepared to start the process all over again the following year. They tend to be both beautiful and unique, which has led to them being planted in a wide variety of neighborhoods. The local wildlife is happy for their presence, especially birds, butterflies, and honeybees. Everything about these trees is showy, including their flowers and dynamic fall leaves. These trees can also be part of your legacy, as they generally live for up to 250 years. In other words, several generations will get to see them grow. Any acorns that aren't eaten will then be in a prime spot to grow. Even a Few Overcup Oak Tree Can Be Beneficial As these grow large and strong, you don't need many to reclaim your landscape. Within a few years, you should notice that your landscape is safe from erosion or extremely wet conditions. This is generally true even if you live on a slope or are otherwise in an area that is vulnerable to mudslides or other serious disasters.

Sycamore Seedlings

Sycamore Seedlings

Sycamore Seedlings are young saplings of the sycamore species (Platanus occidentalis), typically grown from seeds, and they exhibit the tree's characteristic palmate leaves and rapid growth, often near rivers and streams. They offer a range of benefits when integrated into landscaping projects, enriching the visual aesthetics, ecological balance, and functional aspects of outdoor spaces. These young trees bring unique qualities that contribute to various dimensions of landscape design. The sycamore tree is one of the fastest-growing and hardiest trees around, which explains why it's such a popular tree to incorporate into public spaces and private properties. If you're looking for a tree, however, you might want to start with seedlings. Here's why they should be your go-to if you're looking to add a tree to your yard. Saved Money and Time With Sycamore Seedlings Going with a tree that is already partially grown can help you save money on the packets of seeds that you might otherwise try to grow yourself and save you time as your tree is already partially grown. If you're someone who values convenience as you work to develop a landscape that you love and enjoy, you're sure to get the most out of this modest investment. Have Greater Control Over the Process With Sycamore Seedlings Do you prefer to have more control over how things grow and how they're tended to? If so, you want plants that are young so that you are able to oversee the growth process as they start to shoot up. In the case of this tree, starting with a much younger plant helps you ensure that it's getting the best possible care in your hands. It's also a stellar learning experience in case you want to grow another tree in the future. Reduced Effort With Sycamore Seedlings There's a lot of work that goes into turning a seed into a thriving plant, and not everyone necessarily wants to undergo that process at the risk of making a mistake and ending up with nothing as a final result. When you go with a plant that's already started, you save the effort needed to get it there so that you can go right into making sure that it receives the proper care to grow into a magnificent tree. You Get to Watch Your Hard Work Grow With Sycamore Seedlings Watching something grow successfully is something that any gardener takes pride in. Starting out young gives you the opportunity to do exactly this, and it's a joy that many generations can take pride in as they watch the tree get bigger and bigger each year until it reaches its peak and continues to provide joy.

The three main design elements in this European layout focus on sub-dominating, contrasting, and dominant plants. Make sure to pick flowers that complement your house's exterior paint colors. Think about the time of year and which colors resonate with your family's seasonal traditions. To make it seem more organic, plant the flowers in odd numbers. Use a variety of flower heights and textures to create an architecturally inspired contemporary garden. For a more gentle, romantic look, arrange the flowers as focal points at regular heights around an evergreen bush. Build Seasonal Container Gardens With The 6 Flowering Shrubs Planting this package works great when you're short on space but want a splash of color in seasonal garden containers. Size Is 3-4" When Shipped Here is what we ship Muscadine Grape Plant The Muscadine Grape Plant (Vitis rotundifolia) is often called the Scuppernong grape, and it is named after the Scuppernong River in North Carolina. This long-lived wild grapevine is commonly found in warm, humid areas of the eastern United States and is famed for its sweet, dark bronze or purple-black fruit. Muscadine Grape Plant Habitat Native to the southeastern United States, Vitis rotundifolia is a deciduous, woody, climbing vine that grows naturally in swamps, thickets, and dry upland forests with rocky soil. Native Americans cultivated the vine more than 400 years ago, and until fairly recently, many people curated and named wild varieties for their own use. Muscadine Grape Plant Appearance Vitis rotundifolia is a climbing deciduous vine with simple tendrils and smooth brown or greenish-brown bark. The height and width of the vine usually correspond to the dimensions of its support. The vine’s large, shiny, bright green leaves are about four inches wide, heart-shaped to circular, and edged with broad yet pointed teeth. Its blooming period lasts from May to June. During this time, spherical clusters of delicate greenish-yellow and white flowers grow in a panicle formation. After blooming, they yield green berries that turn shiny dark purplish-black to bronze as they ripen in August, September, and October. Muscadine Grape Plant In the Garden Planting Vitis rotundifolia is a wonderful way to add texture and a bit of old-world charm to pollinator, edible, and rustic gardens. Gardeners can train the vine to climb trellises and fences, where it can serve as a privacy screen or decorate a pergola in a sunny, spacious location. Vitis rotundifolia also works well in children’s gardens and play areas, woodlands, and naturalized landscapes. Ecology Of Muscadine Grape Plant If you want to support biodiversity in your area and bring pollinators into your garden, consider planting Vitis rotundifolia in your landscape. Its nectar-filled flowers attract bees and other pollinators, while its foliage provides coverage and nesting areas for songbirds. Many animals, like squirrels, foxes, white-tailed deer, grouses, and wild turkeys, enjoy eating the ripening fruit. Thickets provide nesting cover for songbirds. Vitis Rotundifolia Vines Will Add Sweet Appeal to Your Landscape When you’re looking to bring the flavor of summertime to your landscape, planting Vitis rotundifolia in your garden can provide many seasons of pleasure as the years go by.

Pineapple Plant

Pineapple Plant

A tropical perennial with spiky, sword-shaped leaves and a rosette of red or yellow flowers that develop into a sweet, spiky-skinned fruit with juicy, edible flesh. Scientifically known as Ananas comosus, is a tropical wonder cherished for its striking appearance and unique growth habit. This captivating plant offers several positive attributes that make it a sought-after addition to tropical gardens and indoor spaces. The Pineapple Plant is a perennial herbaceous tropical plant with a juicy, fleshy fruit. The color is somewhere between yellow and white. It originated in South and Central America. Later, it was grown in other regions, where it quickly became an important part of the local economy. What Does Pineapple Plant Fruit Look Like They have short stems. They grow at ground level in the soil. As they mature, they grow long, pointy leaves that resemble swords and that sometimes have spines on their leaves. They produce 40 or more stiff, succulent, and spiky leaves that are closely spaced together on thick, fleshy stems. They can grow up to six feet high and six feet wide. After a long and slow biological growth process, the green ones become barrel-shaped, and the skin turns a rich, golden-brown color. When the fruit smells ripe, it's ready. How Does The Pineapple Plant Grow They develop up to 80 leaves. Then, a flower stem appears. After almost two months, the blooms begin to appear on the stems and open. Single blossoms are open for only one day, but they produce dozens of single blossoms over the next 40 days. Almost two years after planting, a complete flower up to six inches long will emerge on it's crown. Shortly afterward, the fruit begins to appear. The blossoms get fleshy, and they fuse to create the fruit that will ripen during the next six months. They produce only one fruit each. Is The Pineapple Plant Seedless Like raspberries and blackberries, they are self-incompatible unless different varieties are planted close together. They are classified as seedless syncarps. They are created by the fusion of many individual flowers into a single large fruit. Will the Pineapple Plant Grow Indoors They make fabulous, low-maintenance houseplants. Simply twist off the crown as if you were wringing out a towel, and let the crown dry out for a week. Remove the leaves at the bottom until only the stem remains. Add high-quality potting soil to a large pot. Dig a small hole in the center and insert the crown on top. Position the pineapple plant to receive ample sunlight and water it often. In about two months, it should be sufficiently rooted.

Planting Considerations For Zone 9

Of all the plant hardiness zones you can find in the US, this one is one of the most complex. Not only is it one of the hottest climates in the Americas, but it's also one of the driest. The lack of freezing temperatures complicates things further since cold-tolerant plants rarely do as well during mild winters.

Before you select plants for your warmer garden, consider:

1. Your local microclimate. Do you live in a frost pocket, or are you under lots of shade?

2. Rainfall averages. How much do you get per year?

3. Your soil quality. Does it hold on to nutrients well? Does it need a little support?

TN Nursery stocks a variety of plants in this curated collection. No more guessing about which ones survive and thrive in your area - we've done the heavy lifting so you can simply pick your favorites.

Our Favorite Plants For Various Zones

On the hunt for a heat-tolerant flower? Excited about finding a fruiting shrub? TN Nursery offers an extensive collection especially assembled for warm, dry ecosystems.

A few fan-favorites of this collection include:

Blue hydrangea: It's hard to go wrong with this colorful classic, especially if you're looking to spruce up the visual presentation of your yard.
Winterberry: Even if it doesn't get cold where you're at, you can celebrate the season with the bright red color of the winterberry.
Plum tree: For sweet, juicy stone fruits fresh out of the garden, look no further than the drought-tolerant plum tree.

Please keep in mind we offer a growing guarantee on the plants included in this list. We're passionate about bringing our best plants to customers, which includes a one-year warranty in their first year of growing.
