Though an artist looks at the natural landscape to create a landscape painting, it looks like the words went the other way around. The Dutch word "landscape" meant "region" or "tract of land."

Still, though it was used in English in the late 1500s, it was used primarily artistically. It took over 30 years for it first to be used to describe an actual vista in the natural landscape.
