Sword Fern - Polystychum munitum

Sword Fern is evergreen, so it can easily withstand frosts and cold winter weather. It is native to America's west coast, and grows as far north as Alaska and south as far as southern California. This fern is impressive in size, growing almost 6 feet tall when well planted and maintained. They are bright emerald green in color. The fronds are long and narrow, relatively sword-shaped, giving the fern its name. They live up to the name by being quite hardy. They can survive long dry spells, unlike many ferns. These ferns are fabulous as they can also be used in large containers and hanging baskets for porches, patios and other shaded locations.  The fronds of this type of fern is also popular with florists as they are used a lot in the creation of flower arrangements.  These ferns grow in a clump form at the base and the long fronds grow from the base and do not spread from the roots of the plant.  These are great for homeowners as they are very easy to grow and care for.  They supply magnificent color to all gardens and natural areas where they are added and also works great when using them to create beautiful borders.  These ferns grow to become very hardy and can survive some harsh weather conditions. The Sword Fern is an evergreen plant which is native to the western North America. The fronds of the plant are very long. They grow to a length of 60 to 80 centimeters. They grow in a tight clump from which they spread to out in different directions. The leaves are single pinnate. These leaflets alternate on the stalk with each leaflet growing to reach 1 to 14 centimeters long. The fronds remain alive for about one and a half to two and a half years after which they wither. However, they remain attached to the stalk after withering.
