    Swamp milkweed

Posted by Cheryl Traynor on 12th Aug 2020

The roots came in good shape but I had no idea how to plant them. It would be helpful if they came with planting instructions and illustrations for those of us that have never planted these before. I am excited to see how they do and if they do well then there are other plants I am interested in.

    I'm impressed

Posted by Lisa Kinsman on 20th Jul 2020

I'm highly impressed by the quality of the Milkweed shutes that I received! They're sprouting up already! I was under the impression that they weren't going to do anything until next Spring. Thank you!

I recieved my bare roots very fast which was impressive considering I ordered 100. There is already some growth on some and I'm so excited to see them when they start to bloom! They came just as described and I even received a few extra bare root plants! Very happy with my purchase so far!

    Milkweed

Was expecting plants as opposed to bare roots which wouldn't be plants until next year. Other than that they came well packed & in good condition.

    Hoping for Monarchs!

Posted by Deborah Caudill on 2nd Jun 2020

These arrived bare root and I immediately planted them in a damp area by our pond. Can’t wait to see them come up and eventually flower for the enjoyment of the Monarch Butterflies!

Description

Asclepias Incarnata- Swamp Milkweed is a Tall Fragrant Wetland Plant

Asclepias Incarnata- Swamp Milkweed is native to marshy, wet areas. It is most well known for its properties in attracting butterflies, specifically the monarch butterfly. The flower itself is light to dark purple with a long stem that holds the flower firmly in an upright position. Several smaller flowers will begin to branch off and bloom below the central flower, creating the standard milkweed look.

Swamp milkweed grows to be almost 60 inches tall, which is about 150 centimeters. The roots of the plant are thick and white. The leaves which branch out from the primary stem measure up to about six inches/15 centimeters. Unlike most flowers, the swamp milkweed blooms in Summer instead of Spring. The best place for these flowers to grow are damp soils that are in full sunlight. They can also do well in partial shade, but they will need a significant amount of sun. The moisture required for these plants to flourish typically only present on the edges of ponds, lakes and other bodies of water. Sometimes ditch lines are moist enough to grow the swamp milkweed.

Swamp Milkweed Attracts Butterflies, Especially the Monarch Butterfly with its Dark Purple Flowers

Once planted do not expect to see the swamp milkweed when you look at other flowers blooming. They may break through the soil in the late Spring, but as previously mentioned, you won't be seeing flowers until Summertime.

This is because they will maintain their beauty for an extended period after being cut

. In addition to the typical light purple color that will accompany most swamp milkweed, they also come in shades of bright pink to dark pink. Asclepias Incarnata- Swamp Milkweed

Asclepias Incarnata, alternately known as Swamp Milkweed, Rose Milkweed, and Pleurisy Root is native to most of the United States East of the Rocky Mountains and a large portion of Eastern Canada.

Milkweed is a tall fragrant plant that is commonly found in wetlands, along rivers, in marshes, and other low-lying areas. Growing to 5 feet tall, this plant is easily spotted from a distance with its characteristic long slender leaves lining multiple branches. It is topped with flashy bunches of soft vanilla-scented flowers reminiscent of tiny, pinkish-red, upside-down umbrellas.

It is the main food for the Monarch butterfly and is the only place where they will lay their eggs. Making it the perfect staple plant for every pollinator-friendly or native garden. This beneficial plant is also known to draw the local bee and hummingbird population to any area where it has established itself.

Milkweed is a hardy, flood-tolerant perennial that prefers clay soil that will retain water during the dry season. Full sun is best, so plant Asclepias Incarnata in those wet, low-lying spots in your garden, with little shade and poor drainage. It may also help keep mosquito populations down by reducing areas of standing water on your property.

Beautiful on its own, Milkweed makes a stunning addition to fence lines and creates an ethereal backdrop when planted behind shorter flowering plants.
