Spruce Pine Seedlings

The Spruce Pine is an evergreen tree that is mostly found in the Southern Coastal Plain of the United States between Louisiana and South Carolina and into Florida. This medium-size tree, also known as Walter’s Pine, is heavily laden with a canopy of dark-green foliage that is ideal for shading. Although the Spruce Pine can grow as high as 80 feet in the forest, this tree commonly grows no more than 60 feet high in the open. The Spruce Pine grows very slowly at a rate from 1 to 2 feet (or less) per year. The bark is reddish gray-brown in color with shallow ridges. The brownish cones are 2.5 inches in diameter, last up to four years on the branches, and serve as a source of food for wildlife. The pine needles are medium-dark green, about 2 to 4 inches long, and stay on the twigs for two or three seasons. The deeply rooted Spruce Pine grows best in moist acidic soil with full sun; however, it is one of the few pine trees that also can grow in partial shade. The picturesque beauty of the Spruce Pine cannot be ignored in any lawn or landscape and will add tremendous value to your home.
