Description

Southern Magnolia Tree

The southern magnolia tree has long been considered a thing of beauty. So much so that the botanist it was named for had it transplanted to Europe over 300 years ago. At a rate of 12-24 inches per year, the southern magnolia can grow up to 80 feet in height at full maturity. It can also grow up to 40 feet in diameter, providing ample shade for local wildlife. The southern magnolia is considered an ornamental tree as well as a flowering tree. The cream-white colored flowers can grow up to 12 inches in diameter and produce a strong aroma that's pleasing to the senses. The flowers primarily bloom May through June, but occasionally bloom throughout the summer months.

Southern Magnolia Tree have a strong aroma.

The southern magnolia is also an evergreen that maintains most of its leathery leaves all year round. The leaves grow to be 5-10 inches in length, are dark green on top and a rust color on the underside. The fruit of the magnolia tree can grow to be 3-8 inches long and provides food to various species of birds, squirrels, and rabbits. Magnolia trees are best for private landscaping rather than street decor. During autumn, the trees shed their large seed pods, which can become hazardous to passersby.

Southern Magnolia Tree are great in partial sunlight.

It is best to plant a magnolia tree in direct or partial sunlight, as they require a minimum of four hours in unfiltered sunlight each day. For planting, the magnolia tree can survive in a multitude of soil varieties from loamy to sandy. The southern magnolia can also withstand minor flooding and some drought. The tree's shallow and wide-spreading root system help it to find water during brief droughts. Because of the tree's beauty and durability, it has become a favored decoration in lawns and gardens. The food and shade it provides to local wildlife only make it more desirable.
