Product Description

Purple Trillium Plant

Purple Trillium, also known as Trillium Erectum L., is highly prolific in the Woodland Garden area. This plant is known to grow in large groups. Although, the Purple Trillium grows in large groups, it prevents the growth of other nearby plants. Thus, this is a solitary plant. The stem is colored from green to red and the height reaches 10-15 inches. The flowers are colored a deep red, although there is another variation colored white. There are 3 purple petals and 3 green sepals that are of equivalent length. However, the petals are wider than the sepals. The petals and sepals are lance shaped, with the base being the widest . Also, the margins and the texture curls upwards. This flower does produce seeds. Moreover, these seeds are unpleasant to sniff and they do not produce a potent aroma. Also, the seeds if consumed, will leave a sour taste. The leaves should not be consumed as they contain raphide and calcium oxalate. Furthermore, the veins are clearly seen on the leaves as they have a purplish color and seem to be engraved. The anthers are yellow in color for the purpose of pollination. The Trillium Erectum grows from rhizomes and then, will turn into a pleasant clump if not disturbed. This Trillium will best grow in soil that is drained. Furthermore, it must be in some sort of clear shade, so the sun’s rays will not directly hit the Trillium. By midsummer, the plant will become dormant. The Purple Trillium can tolerate the cold down to -31 F.
