NOTE: Our plants ship as bare root plants, and are dug fresh to order during the dormant season.

When learning how to plant cattails, there are a couple of things you need to know.

You will need to know what size area you would like to cover with the cattails and how high you would like them to grow.

Cattails come in a variety of species and also grow to be different heights. It is best to research cattails and find out which one will work best for you. Some cattails will grow to be only around 3 feet high, and then others will grow to be around 9 feet high. The taller ones are great to plant around ponds or lakes or large bodies of water. If you are looking for an ornamental plant for a flower pot or container, the 3-foot ones will probably work fine. You will also be able to use these in flower arrangements for your home, and they are great to decorate with. When planting cattails, it is best to find a spot that will be very moist all year round. You may be planting your cattails from seeds. Make sure that your seeds are clean. You will need to clear the area of all grass and weeds. You will need to plant your seeds in early fall. Plant your seeds about ¼ to ½ inch deep into the cleared soil area. Your cattail seeds will begin coming up in early summer. You will need to keep the grass and weeds out of the area where you have planted your cattail seeds.
