Pennsylvania Smartweed - 25 Plants $99.99 Description

Pennsylvania Smartweed Plant

Pennsylvania Smartweed (Polygonum pensylvanicum) is a fast-growing annual that reaches up to four feet in height. It has dark green, oblong leaves and clusters of tiny pink and white blossoms. It is low maintenance and has versatile medicinal and culinary applications.

This plant blooms from mid-July to the first frost. It thrives in all zones. Its affinity for moist and inundated soil makes it helpful in camouflaging boggy areas and managing erosion. Some species can grow submerged in water, making them an excellent choice for edging ponds and water features.

Pennsylvania Smartweed (Polygonum pensylvanicum)is a Crucial Source of Food for Waterfowl in the Wild

The plant was also believed to have a repellant effect on insect pests. For this reason, farmers scatter smartweed in barns to drive away flies. Another name for this plant is "water pepper," referring to its spicy flavor.

In the wild, smartweed is a crucial source of food for waterfowl. It also attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies, which are essential to the health of any ecosystem - and make a visually pleasing addition to a garden. Overall, smartweed offers exciting rewards for minimal startup and maintenance effort.

It is an annual that flowers in late spring into early summer. The mature plant is around 18 to 36 inches tall. It produces spikes that are covered with tiny flowers, usually reddish or pink.

After the flowers finish by early to mid-summer, seeds form on the spikes that are very popular with a variety of species of songbirds and waterfowl, providing opportunities for backyard bird-watching for the rest of the summer.

This plant is native to Canada and the northern United States and is thus very hardy and cold-tolerant. It thrives in wet, moist areas and direct sunlight. It has long, narrow leaves, and the five-petaled flowers barely seem to open, looking somewhat like a small cup. Numerous flowers form on each flowering spike; most commonly, they are pink, leading to the plant sometimes being called a pink weed.

This flower does well in moist areas where many other flowers cannot survive. It also makes an excellent plant to showcase water features in a garden, such as fish ponds, birdbaths, and fountains.

Its ability to attract many species of birds is an attractive bonus feature many people enjoy. It propagated from seed each year.
