Ninebark Shrub Hydrangea is Also Called the Smooth or Wild Hydrangea
Ninebark Hydrangea is native to North America. The very similar “Annabelle” Hydrangea is a cultivar of this native hydrangea. It grows in the Eastern United States from New York to Florida and can be found west as far as the eastern part of Oklahoma. It is very cold tolerant for a hydrangea, but it prefers specific growing conditions. It likes consistent, well-drained, moist soils. It can be found under wooded canopies near rivers and streams. Some people call it the Smooth Hydrangea or Wild Hydrangea. These shrubs are also called Snow Hill Hydrangea and also Hydrangea Arborescens by the scientific name. They are wonderful because they can be trimmed and shaped to the desired height and size for all gardens and lawns. They do best when trimmed after they have bloomed for the season.
Ninebark Shrub Hydrangea Thrive in Constant and Well Drained Soil
They grow to become very strong and hardy as their trunks and limbs are a woody texture. This shrub gives beautiful large green leaves, and the blooms are amazing as they appear in large and small balls that resemble snowballs as they grow. These shrubs add a great amount of curb appeal to a home and look outstanding where ever they are planted.Native to the eastern United States, the seven bark hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) is a small- to a medium-sized shrub that grows up to ten feet tall.
Seven bark hydrangea grows mostly in the understory of hardwood forests and also along the edges of woodland roads and streams. The origin of its common name "seven bark" comes from the appearance of the bark on its stem. The bark tends to peel off in successive layers, revealing different colors.Medicinally, the roots were used to treat kidney and bladder problems, and tea from the inner bark treated vomiting in children. The outer bark, made into a poultice, soothed swollen muscles and burns; chewing the bark managed stomach troubles and high blood pressure.
Nine Bark Hydrangea Shrubs (Physocarpus) steal the spotlight on any landscaped property with their white or pink, snowball-sized blooms. In a hedge or as a stand-alone bush, this classic, old-fashioned plant sits pretty just about anywhere you place it.
It's not hard to fall in love with Nine Bark Hydrangea Shrubs and their large, green leaves, and woody trunks. The plants command low maintenance and are adaptable to all kinds of weather conditions. These shrubs thrive best in USDA zones of 3-7 and can withstand bouts of drought. Newer varieties of the plant have produced smaller shrubs that enhance a home or business. Nine Bark Hydrangea Shrubs reach a height of between three and eight feet with a width measuring three to 12 feet.
The bark of the shrub looks unique and is a showpiece in itself come wintertime. The bark peels back or exfoliates in interesting layers of color. Of course, the big blooms catch every eye and create that fantastic curb appeal people admire.
Nine Bark Hydrangea Shrubs grow nicely in well-drained, moist soil with full sun to part shade. Few if any pests or diseases affect the plants. As far as pruning goes, the oldest branches can remove in spring. The bushes can also trim to shape and size after blooming.
