Product Description

Nannyberry

As a beautiful, upright tree, the nannyberry is an extremely easy-to-grow shrub and thrives in a wide range of growing conditions. The nannyberry can grow in in sand, loamy or clay soils. Although it prefers a soil pH level of between six to 7.5, the nannyberry can tolerate a more acidic soil as well. This hardy shrub can grow in both well-drained and poorly drained soils; it does well in both dry and moist conditions. The nannyberry tends to produce large thickets on prairie land but becomes small shrubs in forests. For homeowners, the nannyberry can be grown as a big, suckering shrub or as a single or multi-stemmed tree. Gardeners and home growers often use the nannyberry in their landscapes as a border or a hedge. As a tall barrier or screen, this durable shrub can mark the border of a property or provide additional privacy for homeowners. It is well-suited for naturalizing areas. The nannyberry's ripe fruit can be used to make delicious jams and jellies for those who enjoy preserving their own fruit. Left on the shrubs, these berries attracts birds and other wildlife to the area. In the spring, the nannyberry grows glossy, dark green, wavy leaves from one-inch long and narrow buds. These mature to about three to four inches. During May and June, clusters of small flowers bloom from large buds that are also around three to four inches. And, in the autumn, blue-black berries appear with red stalks, offering a beautiful contrast against the yellow, orange and red foliage.
