Maple Leaf Viburnum Description

Maple Leaf Viburnum

Maple Leaf viburnum ( Viburnum acerifolium ) is an aesthetic low-maintenance shrub for all seasons.

It is native to Eastern North America and various Central and Eastern USA regions. It belongs to the family Caprifoliaceae which includes many other eye-pleasing flowering shrubs.

It is a low-lying plant and grows in woodlands, moist or dry. It is also used as a fountain plant and in hedges and borders for additional beautification. The Maple leaf plant is densely branched and grows up to 4 to 6 feet in height and 4 feet in width.

Some plants may also grow up to 6 feet in height. However, most are low shrubs that do not attain much height. It does not require much care when grown fully.

The green maple-like leaves of the Maple plant are coarsely-toothed, rounded, and commonly 2 to 5 inches long. Black spots are often found on the underside of these flat green-colored leaves.

The three-lobed leaves are a sight to the eyes in fall color with the lovely foliage in pink, red, and purple shades; These shades are visible as early as October. Besides the gorgeous leaves, the flowers add to the attractive look of the plant. The white flowers of this plant look lovely, flat-topped hanging in uniform sizes.

They appear in clusters before the arrival of the fruit. The berry-like fruit turns red to bluish-black color when ripe.

Maple Leaf Viburnum grows the best in moist, acidic, drained soil but is tolerant to many soils

These plants are shade tolerant than many plants and are also drought tolerant when mature. It grows the best in moist, acidic, drained soil but is tolerant to many soils. The plant requires full sun of 4 to 6 hours in a day with around 6 hours of part shade.

Yet, it survives relatively well in the shade. Though this plant does not require intensive care, it is good to prune immediately after flowering.

You can Buy this plant commercially as it can be grown through seeds, rhizome suckers, or dormant plants. If the rhizome suckers are not removed in time, they can naturalize, forming colonies. It is one of the best plants to grow in most USDA zones with durable hardiness.

The small pea-sized berry-like fruits act as an essential food source for birds and other wildlife. The plant must be cross-pollinated with another similar plant to produce a good fruit set to get pretty berries in the fall. Drought-resistant plants like this shrub bloom and grow better in controlled watering than in regular.

It would help if you watered a newly-planted shrub every alternative day followed by weekly watering after two weeks.

Providing more water than required does not contribute to the faster growth of the plant. The nature of this plant does not ask for watering in winters unless the weather is specifically dry in your region.

Timely watering enables the tree to have deep roots to survive in drought-like conditions. It is one of the most suitable plants for all hardy zones and offers an aesthetic value while providing shade and food to birds and mammals.
