Lobelia Cardinalis- Cardinal Flower
Lobelia Cardinalis, or cardinal flower, has beautiful red flowers that grow in eight-inch terminus points and the plant itself can stand anywhere from one to six feet high. Every flower has three lower hanging leaves along with two that rise above them, and the bundles all connect at a shaft. This recurring perennial is native to the southern United States, through Mexico and into Central America and northern South America. It can grow on roadsides, in planes, near swamps, lakes or ponds and ditches. The cardinal flower plant uses low water, can be partially in the sun or shade and can grow in clay, limestone, moist, humus-rich, moderate loam or clay soil. With it's attractive, bright flowers, it looks appealing bordering gardens, and it can disperse by burying stems into the ground, causing it to propagated and spread. For fastest growth, the soil should be kept consistently damp, and with good extension, it appeals to delightful hummingbirds, butterflies and various types of birds. It should note that the plant may be toxic, but it is relatively safe and has many medicinal qualities when used in small quantities. The effects are usually not severe, and although it can handle safely, it should not be eaten in large numbers. The root can even be made into a tea that may treat headaches, fevers, colds, stomach discomfort and worms but caution should be taken. Mature plant height is about 30-36 inches tall, and its mature spread is around 10-18 inches wide. It can flourish from zones three through nine and has a medium growth rate in ideal conditions and locations. The stunning cardinal flower will repel deer and can be grown in a pot or planted outside and used for cut flowers. This plant is best planted during the fall and blooms in the middle of the summer, all the way into autumn. Its foliage is green and clusters of piercing, cardinal-red colored flowers grow out of tubes connected to each stem.
