Jewelweed Plant

Jewelweed Plant: Impatiens Capensis is a perennial plant native to North America and is known by several names, such as orange balsam, orange jewelweed, spotted jewelweed, and spotted touch-me-not. It is a self-seeding annual that grows about two to five feet tall. It is a member of the Asteraceae family. Seedlings emerge in the early spring and reach their full size by the end of August. The plant begins to flower in the middle of summer and continues blooming until winter frost damages it. It even bears edible fruit. The fruit, hidden inside an elongated capsule, pops open at the slightest touch in full bloom.

Many plants cannot thrive under harsh conditions such as heavy shade and extremely wet soil; however, this plant can thrive even in unforgiving circumstances. On the surface, this perennial and the closely related (Impatiens pallida) are similar in appearance. However, you can distinguish the pale perennial by the presence of yellow flowers on its stems. In contrast, the Jewelweed plant has weak, watery stems and oval-shaped leaves that possess an alternate arrangement with serrated edges, which are notable characteristics. It is also known for its beautiful blooms.

A big, pouch-like arrangement with a long spur on one of the many sepals enhances the flower's aesthetic appeal.

A hummingbird or a bee must pollinate this plant's vivid orange blooms for them to open and flourish. But it also contains flowers that are little and never open. These blooms, also known as cleistogamous, can fertilize themselves and produce seeds without exchanging pollen with another bloom or flowering plant. The seeds borne by the spectacular, cross-pollinated flowers may grow into larger, more hardy plants. Still, the seeds borne by the cleistogamous flowers produce seed at a significantly lower cost when you compare it to the parent plant bearing showy flowers.

It is an excellent addition to native plant gardens that you can find in damp, somewhat shady conditions. It is also a good option for container gardening. The blooms are attractive, but they also attract various insects such as hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, all of which are lured to the blossoms and create a great visual experience. 

This plant may help you fill in any vacant space in your garden. When you place the fresh seed directly into the ground in the early fall, this plant has the potential to increase quickly and prolifically. With a long history of use in Native American medicine that dates back thousands of years, it is a great value addition to your medicine cabinet.

We dig fresh our plants and ship immediately. We ship US Mail, Priority shipping. You will receive a tracking number once your plants ship. All plants will be fine in their packages for up to 3 days after receiving.

How We Protect Your Plants For Transit

We sell only bare root plants. We dip the roots in tera-sorb silicone gel to retain ample moisture for transit and surround with plastic. This is superior protection for plants in transit for up to 12 days.

Upon Receipt Of Your Plants

Open your plants and inspect the same day received. We offer 3 days to report any problems with your order. Bare root plants need to be planted within 2-3 days of receiving unless weather-related problems prohibit planting. Store in a cool place and keep roots moist and covered with plastic until they can be planted. Water for the first week daily after planting.
