Product Description

Honey Locust - Tree Size is 1-3 Feet In Height

The honey locust (Gleditsia triancanthos) is a deciduous tree indigenous to North America. Although it is respected for its ability to stand up against a wide range of environmental conditions, it thrives best in the moist, fertile soil of river beds and forests across the central United States. The tree produces flowers that bloom during late spring and yellow leaves that turn in the fall. It gets its name from the sweet, sap-like pulp found inside the fruit it produces during the autumn months. Its wood trunk also bears sharp thorns, which gives Gleditsia triancanthos the alternate name of the “thorny locust” (though thorn-less varieties also exist).

The honey locust has many important uses. Medicinally, its extracts have been used as a natural remedy for various ailments including rheumatoid arthritis and certain cancers. The edible fruit contains nutrient-packed seed pods rich in carbohydrates and protein, making them a popular food source among wild, domestic, and grazing animals. Wood from the base of the tree is very heavy, durable, and capable of achieving a high-luster polish. This is very attractive to those in the timber and construction industries, yet the wood does not grow in enough abundance to be considered a large force in terms of bulk-lumber distribution. As a resilient tree, Gleditsia triancanthos can be planted in a variety of locations and is often used as a popular landscaping tool that can create shade, provide natural windbreaks, and prevent erosion. However, these plants are often short-lived, as they are considered a pesky environmental and economic weed in certain regions due to their tendencies to overgrow and attract unwanted pests when not tended to regularly.
