Ground Cover Garden Collection is Great for Soil Erosion Prevention 10 Plants Hand Selected For Your Zone

Ground Cover Garden Collection.  Soil erosion is sometimes a necessary evil of landscaping. However using the appropriate ground covers for the situation, can stop or at least keep soil erosion to a minimum. There are, however, ground covers that can both climb rocky slopes to halt soil erosion as well as cover areas on the ground that cannot seem even to grow grass.

Vinca Minor is a fast-spreading plant. It is one of the more popular slope covers used. It is a fuss-free plant that loves to build anywhere and will grow in poor soil, on rocks, in the shade or full sun. It does not matter to this plant. It will even increase where grass will not. It makes for a pretty ground cover under shrubs and trees It will grow to be about 4-5 inches. This plant needs no special care.

The English ivy is another favorite plant when it comes to slope covers. It will spread horizontally and reach a height of about 8 inches. It is an evergreen that does flower, but because the herb is green, it is hardly noticed. The ivy is also helpful at weed control and also is suitable for planting in shady areas under trees and shrubs. The vine is fast growing. It does require trimming to keep it under control.

The partridgeberry plant is a slow-growing plant that is not very aggressive. It only grows to about 2 inches high. It is a very showy plant with white flowers in the spring and red berries that last through the winter. Along with covering slopes, it is a good cover for bare, shady spots. The partridgeberry prefers moist drained soil.

Ground Cover Garden Collection is Great for Designing your Landscaping Needs

While designing the landscaping for your home or business, you may have decided that you want open areas to accent the trees, shrubbery, and flower beds. However, you may want something with a little more color than just plain grass.

Fortunately, you have the option of choosing to plant a ground cover instead. Consider the following benefits of using ground cover plants as part of your landscape design scheme.

Inhibit Weed Growth One significant benefit of integrating ground cover plants into your landscape design is that such plants help to inhibit weeds' growth. Ground covers typically have a dense growing pattern once established, allowing them to block air and sunlight from any weeds trying to sprout in the soil under the blanket.  Even if weeds breakthrough, the thick roots of the ground cover will continue to choke them out by pulling nutrients away from the weeds' sources. As a result, you will have a functional, clean, colorful area without dealing with unwanted weed growth.

Reduce Soil Erosion on Slopes and Hills Another advantage of planting ground covers on your property instead of grass is that the ground covers help to reduce soil erosion. This prevention of erosion is especially important if your property has sloping or hilly areas.

Since ground covers have a thick and often root system, they help hold the soil. In contrast, grasses have shallow roots, and they usually wash away with the soil, leaving bare spots.

Grow in Both Shade and Sun Along with reducing weed growth and erosion, ground covers are also versatile in that they can grow in both shade and sun, depending on the variety you have selected. If you want part of your landscape to feature ornamental or fruit trees, you can choose a variety that works well in the shade, such as sweet Woodruff or Japanese spurge.

If you have areas that will be in direct sunlight, creeping phlox is an ideal choice. This cover also thrives in drought conditions, allowing it to stay beautiful and healthy even during long dry spells.

When trying to decide what type of plants with which to landscape, ground cover plants provide a viable option, whether you need cover for shade or sun, you should be able to find a visually appealing species that suits both the conditions and decor of your landscape.
