Collecting Your Own Maple Syrup
Friday, March 25
If you'd like to try collecting your own syrup, here's the basic idea. Wait until after the beginning of the year. The nights needs to be freezing and the day quite a bit warmer. These are the best conditions for sap running. Generally, this must be done before the beginning of March.
Drill a 2 inch hole a few inches off the ground, then add a spout. After you collect sap in the bucket you've left under the spout, boil it to concentrate the sweetness. Filter out the impurities and package it while the temperature is at least 180 degrees to keep it safe from spoiling. Find the legacy sugar maple in our tree nursery.
