Perennial Plants Perfect For Flower Gardens & Beds

Perennials are flowers and plants that come back year after year. Though their flowers are every bit as showy as the flowers of annuals, perennial plants are the mainstays of any garden or herbaceous border. Here are four perennials perfect for flower gardens and beds:

Virginia Blue Bells: Mertensia virginica
Also called cowslips, Virginia blue bells are native to bottomlands, so they thrive in moist, rich soil. They have a smooth, erect stem that grows as high as 2 feet, with large leaves topped with clusters of cup-shaped flowers. The flowers are pink at first then become a beautiful blue or lavender.

Rue Anomone: Thalictrum thalictroides
The rue anomone makes an excellent ground cover. It grows no higher than 12 inches tall and has beautiful compound laves and flowers in clusters of two or three on a stalk. They are most often white but can be tinged with pink. This flower likes moist, rich soil and part sun.

Doll Eye Plants: Actaea pachypoda
Doll eye plants get their name because they produce white berries with a black scar that resemble the eyes of dolls. It has divided, oval, toothed leaves that are topped by clusters of small, white flowers. The plant grows from 1 to 2 feet high and flowers in late spring ad early summer. It does best in rich, moist, loamy soil in part sun.

Day Lily Plants: Hemerocallis
Day lily plants are among the most popular of all perennial plants. They produce showy, trumpet shaped flowers that resemble lilies, even though the plant isn’t related to the lily. They come in every possible color save shades of blue. The marvel of day lily plants is that each flower only lasts a day, but there is always another flower to take its place. This can last for weeks or months. Day lilies not only have a long blooming season, but they need minimal care. They tend to do well wherever they are put, but they thrive in well-drained, moist, loamy soil and in full sun to part shade.
