Fox Sedge

Carex Vulpinodea or Fox Sedge is a grassy, dense sedge from the Cyperaceae family and is native to North America. It grows in grassy mounds from 1 to 3 feet tall.

The grassy clumps off shoot small flowering spikes from the center of the plant. These flowering seed heads spray like a fox tail, giving the plant it's a common name. The blossoms are a light green color and bloom May to July.

Fox Sedge tends to be a low maintenance plant and is tolerant in moist, high-water areas. Fox Sedge thrives in projects near ponds, streams or near water run-off areas.

This plant propagates easily and can fill large spaces and borders. Often can be found in the wild as the dominant plant in a sedge meadow.

Abundant in Missouri, this plant does well in zones 3 through 7, prefers damp soil and full or partial sun. Native to both acidic and alkaline soils, this perennial is even adapted to heavy clay, making it a natural, low maintenance choice for larger projects.

This plant is tolerant for deer and works well as a neutralizing landscape plant or as a border to water features or low-lying, water retaining areas.

For best growth, seeds should be planted in the fall. If using a moist-stratified method, it can be planted successfully in the spring.
