Scientifically known as macrophylla, it is a captivating flowering shrub celebrated for its enchanting beauty and the tranquil ambiance of gardens and landscapes. Revered for its vibrant azure blossoms, it is a botanical masterpiece that has charmed horticulturists and nature enthusiasts for generations. Blue Hydrangea, with a profusion of attractively hued blooms, make beautiful additions to any garden. The flowers appear in clusters or cones that can be up to eight inches wide. The foliage is generally deep green in color with a matte or waxy surface, but leaf shapes vary greatly between varieties. Some plants produce oblong or heart-shaped leaves of between four and eight inches in length, while others are adorned with serrated, deeply veined, or lobed leaves of similar size. Blue Hydrangea Has Stunning Colors One unique fact about them is that the most eye-catching parts of the plant aren't made up of petals, as is the case with most other flowering plants. Instead, showy, colorful blooms are comprised of petal-like structures called sepals. Sepals are sturdier than regular flower petals and furnish protection to the tiny flowers that are hidden behind or below them. Their bloom clusters vary from faint sky-blue to deep purple, with most shades in between. The color of the flowers that it produces is based on the plant's variety as well as on the content of certain minerals in the surrounding soil. Blue Hydrangea Is A Perennial Favorite Shrub-like blue hydrangeas go dormant in the cooler months. The plants start putting on new foliage as soon as warmer weather returns, and new flowers begin forming in the mid to late spring. They will burst into full bloom in the early summer, with the flowers generally reaching their prime during the months of June, July, August, and September. Some varieties only bloom once per growing season, while others rebloom continuously throughout the summer. Blue Hydrangea Is Great For Creating Height and Depth Blue hydrangeas can grow to heights of six feet or more with a six-foot branch span. These standard varieties are suitable for creating a border, a flowering green wall, or a divider between areas of a lawn. If space is a consideration, smaller varieties that are great for raising pots or planters are also available. These varieties will reach heights of just two to three feet with a similar branch-spread diameter. Some of the plants also act like vines and are capable of scaling trees and fences to heights of 50 feet or more.

Once a capsule falls to the ground, it splits open to help more trees grow. The bark of these trees exfoliates to reveal multiple shades of gray and brown. When you combine this with the rarity of how long they bloom, you've got an eye-catching tree that will really draw people's attention. The Leaves Of Twilight Crepe Myrtle The leaves can grow in three different patterns: whorls, alternate or opposite. Either way, they grow in groups of three. In autumn, the leaves will change to a stunningly brilliant red. By that time, the flowers are gone, leaving only the fall leaves to brighten your yard. Fortunately, the entire process starts over again in the spring, so you'll get to enjoy gorgeous purple or red colors throughout most of the year. Twilight Crepe Myrtle A Home for Birds Another good reason you'll want to consider planting them is that they provide the perfect natural habitat for wrens and songbirds. Therefore, if you've ever wanted to experience a nest up close, this is the tree that will make your wish come true. These trees will also provide any lawn with a lot of vertical interest. As such, they have fantastic curb appeal. The best presentation is typically in a triangular pattern with three trees. This takes advantage of the tree's rather unusual shape. Rather than having one simple trunk, they spread out into many branches from a low-lying, close to the ground level. This creates even more visual appeal.

When used in landscaping, it offers several advantages that enhance the aesthetics and functionality of the environment. Understanding the Chinese Snowball Bush The Chinese snowball bush is an extravagant deciduous flowering plant that can rise up to 20 feet wide and 25 feet tall. These plants grow to their largest size in warmer climates. While its scientific name is Viburnum macrocephalum, its common name is derived from the rounded, eight-inch blooms that grow from April to June.

When most people think of shrubs, they think of evergreen plants that work as borders or privacy screens in the landscape. Shrubs with flowers are plants and small trees that go the extra mile by providing a splash of color during their blooming season. They can serve as borders that add depth like an evergreen shrub, or function as a bold accent piece in your landscaping. Explore our selection of flowering shrubs at TN Nursery to find the next addition to your backyard.

Amazing Colors with Flowering Shrubs

Shrubbery can perform a variety of functions in your landscaping. Some options, like lilacs, can serve as a privacy screen once they grow tall enough. Just remember that they'll need to be trimmed back eventually to keep them under control. Some types of shrubs work well as a border next to a fence, yard, or walkway. They can be shaped through trimming to create the desired effect. Other types, like red or pink weigela, serve as ornamental pieces and work best when you simply let them grow naturally.

Snowballs in July

Some of our most popular shrubs at TN Nursery grow clusters of white flowers that actually look like snowballs. These are fun and lively shrubs that will attract pollinators like hummingbirds, honey bees, and more. Some of our favorites include the Snow Hill Hydrangea, Chinese Snowball Bush, Old Fashion Snowball, Snowball Hydrangea, and Black Haw Viburnum. For a true show-stopper, you may want to consider a blue hydrangea shrub. Instead of white, the puffy snowball blooms of this shrub are intense and beautiful shades of striking blue.

Soft Pinks for Accents

We have many varieties of shrubs that bloom in light red and soft pink shades that are perfect for accents in a flower garden or backyard sanctuary. If you want pink colors at height, a Muskogee Crepe Myrtle, Pink Crepe Myrtle, or Twilight Crepe Myrtle can grow between 10 and 15 feet tall. Is it a shrub at that point or a tree? It won't matter when you see the way it beautifies your outdoor space.

For accents closer to the ground, Red Weigelia, Pink Weigelia, Pink Hibiscus, Butterfly Bushes, or Pink Spirea make good choices. These are worthy additions to any backyard floral arrangement that you design to pair with your landscaping. Most of our flowering shrubs at TN Nursery are deciduous, meaning their leaves drop off in the winter, but they come back every spring and bring the same color schemes back to life with minimal effort.
