As a unique species, the plant gives its own family who falls somewhere between moss and fern. The plants develop into large colonies and provide a habitat for fish, amphibians, and wildfowl. Throughout history, the Dwarf Horsetail has many uses as a scrubbing or sanding agent due to the high amount of silica in the reed. The slender stem of the Dwarf Horsetail is hollow and jointed. Cylindrical in shape, the stems are wiry, unbranched, and small. The green stems are accented with black banding at the nodes providing an animal or horse hair look.
