Appalachian Sedge (Carex appalachia)

Appalachian Sedge: Carex appalachia, common name Appalachian Sedge, is a beautiful partial-shade sedge plant that adds lovely green color, intriguing fountain-like texture, and an attractive all-around appearance to your yard.

It will grow in almost any of the USDA plant hardiness zones. It is a North American native species, initially noted growing in the Appalachian mountain regions of Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Carolina.

Appalachian Sedge is not fussy about soil quality. While it likes consistent moisture, it also likes dry feet and is drought-tolerant. Besides the ability to bounce back from dry spells, this grass is also deer-resistant, rabbit-resistant, heat-tolerant, and cold-tolerant ornamental grass.

Where to Use Appalachian Sedge in Your Yard

Appalachian Sedge has an independent streak and does not need much care from you after you plant it. Start by selecting a semi-shaded site and plant it with soil amended with hardwood mulch. Ensure it receives about an inch of water each week.

Gardeners in the coldest growing zones should also insulate the roots with an inch or two of mulch or fallen leaves in the autumn and pull them back in the spring. However, those in more moderate temperature zones can skip this step.

Plant your Carex appalachia for beautiful results:

In mass plantings: It is stunning around the foundation, next to a shed or outbuilding, or around a mailbox.

In a shade garden: Find a spot that gets some morning sunshine.

Near a pond, creek, or water garden, ensure the roots can dry.

Groundcover planting: Fill in a blank space with this lovely textural plant.

Appalachian Sedge Is Green and Has a Beautiful Texture

Appalachian sedge is a beautiful light to medium green shade with long, thin, grassy leaves. It reaches up about a foot high, then gracefully bends. Overall, this creates a spilling or water fountain effect. It stays about a foot wide, so planting several together makes a more significant impact.

My plant plugs came quickly and nicely packed. I look forward to seeing them sprout this Spring.

Fast delivery of plugs

The plugs showed up virtually the next day. The weather was extremely hot when they went into the ground but I watered profusely and I think every plug has started putting out growth. I'd give it five stars for the your company's performance so far but the plants are just not big enough to really judge yet.

Arrived quickly after ordering. Ordered 100. Seemed more like 1000 when one plants all of it! That's not a complaint, There were well over 100. I'm eager to see how it takes off in my plot. Only time will tell. Experience with the ordering process etc all very good.
