Smooth Cord Grass
Smooth Cord Grass is a perennial species native to the United States that flourishes in standing water, specifically salt water and brackish tidal marshes throughout the upper-south and southeastern regions.
This species is deciduous, erect, and can reach a mature height of ten feet. They require the full sun and a moist environment for the best growth; however, they are drought tolerant for short periods. Once you plant this decorative grass, you will not need to provide anything other than an occasional trimming.
Unlike freshwater pond grasses, smooth cord grass can tolerate salt water. In fact, it is a common plant in the brackish marshes (and even bordering seawater inlets and beaches) along the east coast from Maryland to Florida.
Besides having a lovely, highly decorative value, this species is also essential to helping to prevent soil erosion due to wave action and wind. The roots of the grass take hold of the marsh floor. This impact creates a two-pronged impact. First, it helps to hold the earth below in its place. Secondly, this prevents it from backwashing out to sea.

The Smooth Cord Grass Beauty
This plant emerges from a creeping, vigorous root system that spreads from under the water. The leaves grow upright in large clusters. They generally stay around three feet above the water. As the name implies, the grass is smooth and rounded, giving the appearance of a cord.
The color is golden brown or yellow to medium green, with colors often varying--even on one plant.
