Nikko Blue Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla)

Nikko Blue Hydrangea: TN Nursery proudly provides our customers with a customer-favorite selection, the Nikko Blue Hydrangea, Hydrangea macrophylla. This plant is a cold-hardy and heat-hardy woody, perennial, flowering shrub that thrives in partially sunny sites and almost all growing zones in the United States.

Hydrangea macrophylla is an Asian native that came to North America from China, Korea, and Japan. However, American gardeners embraced this species, which now enjoys widespread use.

Where to Use the Nikko Blue Hydrangea in Your Garden

Nikko Blue Hydrangea will work well within many garden styles. Consider investing in this versatile shrub for the following gardens:

  • Cottage garden
  • Cutting Garden
  • Zen garden or Asian-inspired garden
  • Pollinator garden (it attracts bees, butterflies, moths, and birds)
  • As a property line marker
  • Garden border
  • Mass planting to grow a privacy hedge
  • Fairy garden
  • Urban garden

The Minor Care Requirements of Nikko Blue Hydrangea

Taking care of any hydrangea is simple and takes a short time commitment. Here are the things that hydrangeas require:

  • Select a partially sunny spot in the garden
  • Fertilize it twice yearly (early spring and fall)
  • Prune to the desired shape in the fall; dead spent blossoms as they wither
  • Provide an inch of water weekly (more if the site receives more sun than shade)
  • Add a one-inch layer of mulch to insulate the shrub's base and roots in the fall if you live in a cold region.

The Vivid Beauty of the Nikko Blue Hydrangea Shrub

Gardners covet the Nikko Blue Hydrangea for its impressive and showy flowers. This shrub can reach six feet tall and wide if you let it grow wild, although most gardeners cut it back every autumn. The leaves are dark and glossy green, oval in shape, and with a light textural feel.

The stems are woody, tan, and sturdy enough to support the blue, fluffy-looking blossoms. Flowers average almost six inches, with dozens of petite blue to purple discs making up the petals. The blooms are long-lasting and have a sweet, lightly floral fragrance that will beckon the bees to visit them.

Not as described on website

Description said these were 12-18” but what I received was 6-10”. I’ve noticed now the description on the website has been changed to 6-12”. Very disappointing I didn’t get what was advertised.

l don't believe the plant was the height advertised, but it was alive and appeared healthy. I only got the plant 3 days ago and planted it the same day. Hard to say more.
