Blue Grama Grass (Bouteloua gracilis)

Blue Grama Grass: Bouteloua gracilis, aka blue grama grassĀ or mosquito grass, is a long-lived, warm-season perennial that will flourish in almost every part of its native North America.

In fact, this plant grows naturally from the western plains of Canada, in the entire lower 48 of the United States, and to the northern Mexican states. That large footprint is a testimony to the resilient nature of this ornamental species.

Blue grama grass prefers to bask in the full sunshine, but it will also tolerate some shade, especially in the afternoon. It is drought-tolerant and needs a mere half-inch of water each week, but it does not like overwatering. It's unfussy about soil texture or quality. However, if you are planting it in heavy or clay soil, you should de-compact it and work in some organic matter before you plant it.

Where to Use Blue Grama Grass in Your Yard

This lovely ornamental grows in attractive one- to two-foot clumps that will not overpower the good looks of your other plants. It can serve as an accent plant or plant them in mass plantings to create an eye-catching focal point.

Here are a few places where TN Nursery customers use Bouteloua gracilis to accentuate their landscape:

  • Mass planting or foundation planting
  • Bird garden
  • Pollinator garden
  • Butterfly Garden
  • Rock garden
  • Native species garden
  • Garden border (middle row)

You can put this lovely species anywhere you want to add lovely green foliage.

Blue Grama Grass Is Small and Charming

Compared to some ornamental species, this grass is relatively low-growing and easy to control. It reaches a mature height of around two feet and displays long, slim, green to blue-green leaves that grow upright. In the middle of summer, it produces its flowers, purple open seed pods that birds will enjoy.

Blue Grama Grass

I have this planted in my farm where a wide space is left untouched. It fills in to the empty spaces around.
