Andropogon Big Bluestem Grass
Big bluestem grass (Andropogon) is a decorative, large, perennial grass with large, lovely tufts that flower in the late summer and early fall. It grows in almost every USDA plant hardiness zone and is impressively large.
Big bluestem is a native species in North America and Central America. It is most famous as the tall prairie land grass widespread across the Great Plains regions of the United States and southern Canada.
It loves a mix of sun and shade but also tolerates full sunshine. It's a warm-season grass, doing most of the work strengthening and spreading its roots in the late spring and early summer. It's unfussy about soil quality, and while it would prefer an inch or more of weekly rainfall, it is also drought tolerant.
Where to Use Big Bluestem Grass in Your Landscape
This very tall Andropogon grass is helpful for many landscape applications:
- Create a natural privacy screen: Plant it to create a more private deck, hot tub, or patio if you have close-by neighbors.
- Near a pond or water garden: This sedge makes the banks surrounding a pond more intriguing
- Pollinator garden: Bees, butterflies, and dragonflies will visit and help pollinate your garden for better health.
- Restoration: Restore a depleted natural area with native grass species for less maintenance.
Big Bluestem Grass Reaches an Impressive, Stately Size
When you see the tall size and blue-green color of big bluestem grass, you will immediately understand the reason for its descriptive and accurate common name.
The plant can grow as tall as eight feet, with a spread of about three feet per plant. It grows in small clumps that develop solid and deep roots to support the skyscraping height.
The grass generally stands upright and true; if you see it beginning to flop, then it might have a bit too much shade. Feathery-textured fork-shaped red or copper flowers appear during the middle to end of summertime and go to seed just before fall.
