Soft Rush Grass (Juncus effusus)
Soft Rush Grass: Juncus effusus, or soft rush grass, is a lovely perennial ornamental grass that displays a pleasing shape and beautiful, fresh green color. It grows in almost every USDA plant hardiness zone in the United States and is an easy-care species. It grows best in a mix of sun and shade. It thrives in various humidities, from standing water to drier soil.
Juncus effusus has several common names, including the following:
- Common Rush
- Green Bull Rush
- Japanese Mat Rush
- Soft Rush
- Bog Rush
Where to Use Soft Rush Grass in Your Landscape
The species is native to both North America and South America. In nature, you would find it around swamps, bogs, wetlands, or marshes.
It grows in attractive clumps and spreads relatively quickly. Because it is tolerant of many environments, it is a favorite for installing in natural areas, around ponds or water features, or in a partially-shaded spot in a shade garden.
It is also helpful for preventing erosion due to soil compaction. The deep taproot will take firm hold in the soil and help to slow down water rushing across packed soils and eroding the materials. The taproot also helps to de-compact the earth from underneath as it burrows its way underground.
The Lovely Good Looks of Soft Rush Grass
Soft rush grass is equally at ease growing in standing water at the pond's edge as it is in an arid location like a mountain ledge. But even more importantly, it is as lovely to behold in either of these spots.
Juncus effusus develops into a vase shape as it grows--narrow at the bottom and widening at the top. It reaches an average full-grown height of under four feet and has lovely soft yellow flowers attracting bees to your garden.
