Dewberry Shrub

Dewberry Shrub: The dewberry shrub is a small deciduous shrub with a lower growth pattern than some fruiting shrubs--it tops out between five to six feet high. It is a native plant to the United States, enjoying particular popularity in the southern region.

This lesser-known plant is worth taking the time to learn about. The sweet fruit makes it a staff favorite here at Tn Nursery. Indeed, the delicious berries are juicy and sweet, excellent for jams, jellies, pies, or other pastries. It is similar in its appearance and flavor profile to the better-known raspberry plant.

About the Dewberry Shrub

It takes the dewberry shrub about four to five years to produce berries. However, while you wait, you will still benefit from the beauty of this lovely bush.

The thick foliage is medium to dark green. At intervals along the stem, alternate compound leaves occur. The leaves usually grow in attractive clusters of three leaflets, though some may produce five leaflets. The leaflets are a pleasing oval shape and measure up to three inches long and one inch wide. The undersides of dewberry leaves are pale green and tapered at the tip.

Dewberry fruit is edible and consists of numerous drupelets with tiny seeds. Springtime brings delicate white blossoms that bear small green berries. The berries fatten up throughout the early spring. As the fruit matures, the berry color changes from light green to bright red to an intense purple or black.

The Dewberry Shrub Requires Little Care

This plant tolerates a variety of soils, ranging from moist to dry. It grows in meadows and hedges.

Dewberry plants are a hardy perennials requiring very little maintenance. However, they do require fertilization once established. In general, dewberry plants need several hours of direct sunlight a day.

The dewberry shrub is drought-resistant and can withstand short dry spells without your assistance. This resilient shrub also resists many common plant diseases, pests, mold, and mildew when you plant it in full-to-partial sunshine.
