What is a Zone Map?
The USDA has created a growing guide for each region of the United States called the USDA Hardiness Zone Map. To develop the map, the USDA Agricultural Research Service and Oregon State University – PRISM Climate Group gathered information from horticulturist and climate experts throughout North America. As a result of the research, the map separates the United States into eleven specific planting zones calibrated by the average winter temperature. Each region is defined by its winter temperature being 10°F warmer or colder than its neighboring zone.
