Broome sedge is a type of grass that is native to the Southeastern United States and stretches to the Great Lakes. The species has also introduced to Hawaii and California. A perennial grass, broome sedge grows from 1 1/2 to 3 feet tall. Stalks of the class come together to form tufts of flowering culms. The overall appearance of broome sedge characterized by the straw-colored remnants of older culms, which surround new, developing culms. Newer culms are light to medium green in color, have a hairy appearance, and flattened.
Broome sedge is easy to grow and acts as a soil stabilizer as it grows well in poor, infertile areas as well as floodplains. For landscaping, broom sedge can use for rain gardens, erosion control, and storm water management. Full sun is preferable for this species, although it is adaptable to partial shade. Broom sedge requires little maintenance except cutting or burning the stalks down to the ground in winter.
